My 70th Birthday Family Meal

I had not been back to the Downtown Grill in quite some time. (See my August 26, 2014) review. This evening was supposed to be a surprise for me so my husband said, but he wanted me to know what was up. It seems at his suggestion, (he knew he had better say that) the family was to join us... read more

After reading rave reviews we were underwhelmed with our experience. The ambiance is quite pleasant and our waiter knowledgeable and affable.....unfortunately the food was dismal. My wife[a vegetarian] ordered the cheese plate with a spinach side....it consisted of a selection of 4 cheeses cut in small cubes [and not vary many]..the kind you get as free samples roaming the aisles of many... This place is hard to find and requires customers to walk through a smoky cigar bar to get to the restaurant seating in the back. The menu was a typical steakhouse type, nothing really out of the ordinary or special. I would not return as there are other options in Macon with more creative offerings.

Every dish from appetizer to entrees to dessert was delicious. Highly recommend the cheese platter for appetizer. I had the dry-aged ribeye, which had some of the best flavor I have ever had with a steak! My wife's filet mignon was very tender and also had great flavor! Their filets stuffed with blue cheese or goat cheese, which I had... More

This was a last minute choice for a group of business associates. Other reviews had me selecting the Downtown Grill for dinner. Don't be fooled by it's location. The front door is located in an alley and it almost appeared that the place was not open but through the medieval door awaits a very cool spot. Filled with old world... More

Steaks grilled to perfection. Almond green beans are a must. Thank you Trip Advisor for leading us to this gem while passing thru Macon.

This is an old time steak and chop house. Loved the ambiance but you enter and exit through a smokey bar. Oh well, I smoked a lot in my day. The mixed grill, filet mignon, lollipop lamb chop, and whole quail was outstanding. Hold your breath as you arrive and depart and it's well worth a visit.

Tucked in an alley and easy to miss, once inside you will find a top notch restaurant with lofty ambitions and friendly execution. Wonderful shrimp and grits, tender steaks with succulent toppings, and a great craft beer selection. Servers are friendly and happy to share the extensive daily specials. When in Macon and have the time and money for a... More

Although the cut-through the cigar smokers at the bar was awful, the tavern atmosphere at the back room is appealing. The service is consistent and the specials are intriguing. The owner "collects" premium bourbon and the wait staff will describe the flavors accurately in order to select one ("Neat, of course!) The appetizers are satisfactory and the salad is passable;... Glad to find this respite in a college town. Hard to find(don't trust your GPS). But good ambiance, friendly staff, and quick service.
