A place with character

I only stopped here for a drink, so I can't tell about the food, but I liked the place and Michelle, the owner. He's certainly not the average USAn bartender. He's a French guy who remains very French despite so many years in USA: laconic, outspoken, and not really caring too much whether you like... read more

Perhaps not the best Eastern Sierra restaurant - but certainly one of them. Then again that is not saying much as the Eastern Sierra is no culinary Mecca. Husband and wife team, she cooks well and while he deals laconic Gallic service, do not expect fast food (though it can arrive fast), the menu and drinks will vary according to... More

Where else in the middle of the desert can you find a charming, relaxing cafe with paintings covering the walls and jazz music playing in the background? The food is incomparable and they have a great selection of beer and wine. Please note that this is the wrong choice if you are in a hurry and expect your food prepared... More

Waited over an hour for terrible, over priced food. Only one other table so it wasn't busy. We had 9 people in our group and the plates were served 3 dinners at a time with 10 to 15 minutes between the next served. By the time the last 3 were served, everyone else was done eating. No apology or even... More

The ambience of this old 1892 building which was once a restaurant and still is a restaurant is equalled by the quality of the food, the friendly nature of the French owner and his Berber wife. The paintings on the walls for sale by a California artist provide a nice diversion while the food is being prepared. Carlos the mutt... More

If you read the other reviews, you will know that service here can be a bit maddening, and the food would be out of this world anywhere, but especially in a restaurant poor town like Independence. We had dinner here after a visit to Manzanar and were staying overnight down the street. The place wasn't busy when we arrived, and... More

A wonderful birthday surprise, we were able to get a reservation for 7 people on Valentine's Day, only 5 hours before! We had read reviews about the "European service" so we were prepared to wait for our food. The meal lasted about 3 hours total, after the first 45 minutes, we were all a little concerned, especially when we saw... More

We had been home 4 days from an extended trip to Paris. This meal compares with the FABULOUS dining we experienced there. I know of no other place in southern California that does such a quality job!!! If you haven't dined there, you should. But please order something you would expect to find on the menu in France. Sure they... More

An oasis of civility and good food, in a small town facing some challenges from up the highway. Discovered a wonderful new beer, and an excellent French (Languedoc) chardonnay. The bolognese sauce was great, as was the salmon. Just don't expect swift service--fast food this ain't.

Spend a minute or two looking around. You will discover an outside patio with a mural as well as a chalkboard with the specials and a chalkboard with beers. We sat down too quickly and didn't see the chalkboards until after we had ordered. I had a nicoise salad and my friend had a BLT with fries which were good... More
