Second visit

An oasis of civility and good food, in a small town facing some challenges from up the highway. Discovered a wonderful new beer, and an excellent French (Languedoc) chardonnay. The bolognese sauce was great, as was the salmon. Just don't expect swift service--fast food this ain't.

Spend a minute or two looking around. You will discover an outside patio with a mural as well as a chalkboard with the specials and a chalkboard with beers. We sat down too quickly and didn't see the chalkboards until after we had ordered. I had a nicoise salad and my friend had a BLT with fries which were good... More

This place has an absolutely charming interior but the older guy who waited on us was the worst, unenthusiastic, waiter we have ever had. I think he was an owner or the owner. HIs cigarette smoke permeated the restaurant. He had a shaggy (but friendly) dog that was running around in the restaurant and he stayed at the counter reading... More

I was talking to my sister last night and The Still Life came to mind as we remininised about a South Pasadena Restaurant, Gino's, that was owned and operated by yet another European couple, where we often dined many years ago---So I did a Google, and yepperz, The Still Life is still up north of me---and getting some very unkind... I have read some of the mean spirited reviews posted here with dismay. Those people just don't understand or appreciate the hidden gem that is The Still Life. For many years now, we always time our Long Beach to Mammoth departure so we can stop at The Still Life for dinner. Yes, the service is on the slow side but... More

Great French food and nice atmosphere. Best for dinner instead of lunch. Here are the details: DON'T be in a hurry, the staff takes it's time. Don't be insulted by this, they are getting on in years and will treat you like family if you're not rude to them. Give them time. Go for dinner. Stay in Independence. But a... More

Like most of the other reviews I agree that the service was slow but the food is acceptable for a French kind of bistro in the USA Sierras. Not to everyone's taste but we enjoyed our experience albeit the owner displays a weird sense of humour. A tight menu which I applaud should allow faster service. The quality is acceptable... More

When you are in a township of 660+ folks you do not expect to encounter fine dining in any way, shape or form. Well, what a surprise! We made a reservation for 6:30 p.m. on the recommendation of Strider at the Mt. Williamson Motel. We arrived at this tiny restaurant prepared to dine. It's small - a banquette seated perhaps... We had heard about this tiny restaurant from friends and since we were not in a hurry decided to try it for lunch after visiting the Independence Museum. The sign on the door said closed and when we came in the waiter said he was keeping it open for us. Yes, we had called ahead for the 7 of us.... More
