This is an eclectic restaurant with pretty darn good food. Unfortunately, the service is slow, really slow. But then Europeans do eat and run like Americans do. I had a lovely salad that was quite large and filling. My husband had a salad and steak and he really enjoyed both. This is the only dinner place in town other than... More

I have dined here a few times over the past decade (as I passed through the area), and I decided to stop in again this August. The first thing I noticed was that the menu has changed -- rather than a "French" restaurant; the menu is now more oriented towards "casual dining" (burgers, etc.), with only a couple of French... This restaurant was a big and pleasant surprise in Independence, where we stopped for the night on an Eastern Sierra road trip. The food is superb. We had a goat cheese salad (including figs!) and the Merguez - a North African style lamb sausage, which is delicious and comes with a very tasty, spicy sauce. The Merguez came with shoestring... My husband was looking forward to a stopover this past Wednesday in one of Independence’s welcoming motels and enjoying dinner at Still Life Café, where he’d had lunch a few years ago. I phoned ahead at 6:15 pm, told the lady he expected to get there by 8:00 and was she sure they’d stay open till 9 or might they... More

This restaurant clearly takes advantage of being one of a few eateries in town. They have NO regard for quality of food or service. After seating ourselves, someone popped their head out of a cigarette smoke filled kitchen. Soon after the waitress, whose perfume burned my nose hairs, finally took our order. After taking our order to the kitchen she... More

my wife and i have been stopping here on our travels intermittently for about 15 years, even back before owners relocated to independence from olancha. daytime and night time menu has become a little more streamlined than we remember from past visits... with mainly burgers, sandwiches and salads at lunch (gourmet and hand prepared all the way) dinner entree special... It's small, the menu is limited and the service is, well, slower than you'd like. But if you just have some wine and chill, it's worth the wait. The food is the best in this small town. Salads are fresh and inventive, burgers and steaks are great. Go with the flow and you'll have a good time.

There were 6 in our group & everyone loved their food. The locals weren't really huge fans of this restaurant -- but don't listen to them -- it's undoubtedly the best dinner in Independence and would do well in any large city.

Still Life Café is an amazing find in Independence, CA. We were there to visit Manzanar National Historic Site. It was the café or Subway. Not even a MacDonald in town. The food and wine are superb. The atmosphere is nice with great pictures on the wall and good classical music. But the service is very slow. In France, you... More

It's not often that I pass through Independence, CA, but whenever I'm traveling on Highway 395 I make a point of dining at the Still Life Cafe. Though the menu is limited and service is slow, the quality of the food and creative preparation have never disappointed. Daily specials are listed on a blackboard, and on a recent visit included...
