Garlicky Goodness

Probably the best place in Richmond to get enough garlic to keep the vampires at bay for at least a week or two. Zu's has been here forever it seems, it looked virtually the same when I first visited nearly 20 years ago. Hey, when you're doing it right, why change? Recommend the Zuppa de Pesce... read more

Yes, you will likely have to wait for a table most nights and there is not really much space in which to do so. Yes the servers can act like they are doing you a favor in acknowledging your existence. They have been known to interrupt one mid-order and return to the kitchen as orders become available. (On the plus... More

Well, I still haven't eaten at this restaurant. After waiting in line for over half an hour for it to open with a party of seven, we were told all the tables were full because there were two large tables reserved for larger parties. Who knew they took reservations?! I've never seen that anywhere. It's stand in line and wait... More

Amazing fresh Italian food in a restaurant that you have to wait outside for maybe an hour. However, when the stars come to Richmond they go to Mamma Zu's (i.e., Tom Hanks, Bruce Springsteen were recent visitors). The food creations are very, very good and worth the wait, unless it is raining or snowing outside!

Mamma Zu's consistently delivers both delicious food and a unique dining experience. While the head waiter is not all smiles, he is efficient and the staff are always courteous in answering questions that you may have. It's a tight space with all the people waiting for tables in any nook they can find, but it's all part of experience, and... More

We came to Richmond for the Anthem Marathon. Two years ago we were here for the same event and ate at Edo's Squid -That was a big mistake. We wish we knew about Mamma Zu's. When we arrived we thought GPS took us to the wrong place. The restaurant is in a residential neighborhood. From the outside it looks dark... More

The most interesting thing about this restaurant is that on the outside it literally looks like an abandoned building. The Mama Zu sign is all faded and there is an old door with a tiny window towards the top. The first time I went there, I was amazed when we walked in and it was bustling with people and activity.... Food and service are always top-notch. There are no false pretenses at Mamma Zu's--if you want your ego stroked, go somewhere else. No one will apologize to you for how busy they are, but once you're seated, no one will rush you for the next seating. Every customer is treated equally, and the broccollini is the stuff dreams are made... More

I have been wanting to go here for years and finally did tonight. I understand all the reviews about how the place is a dive - no maintenance on the interior or exterior of the building. They don't give you menus or descriptions, just a chalk board of the menu items. After all the hype, I was very disappointed and... More
