We came to Richmond for the Anthem Marathon. Two years ago we were here for the same event and ate at Edo's Squid -That was a big mistake. We wish we knew about Mamma Zu's. When we arrived we thought GPS took us to the wrong place. The restaurant is in a residential neighborhood. From the outside it looks dark... More

the best food in town and the worst location. if you just love the food pick it up at 8 and 1/2. if your young and have lot's of time and don't mind waiting in lines there is nothing better then Mama Zu. also if you are from out of town you wouldn't want to come to Richmond and miss... More

The most interesting thing about this restaurant is that on the outside it literally looks like an abandoned building. The Mama Zu sign is all faded and there is an old door with a tiny window towards the top. The first time I went there, I was amazed when we walked in and it was bustling with people and activity.... Food and service are always top-notch. There are no false pretenses at Mamma Zu's--if you want your ego stroked, go somewhere else. No one will apologize to you for how busy they are, but once you're seated, no one will rush you for the next seating. Every customer is treated equally, and the broccollini is the stuff dreams are made... More

I have been wanting to go here for years and finally did tonight. I understand all the reviews about how the place is a dive - no maintenance on the interior or exterior of the building. They don't give you menus or descriptions, just a chalk board of the menu items. After all the hype, I was very disappointed and... More

Delicious food, generations worth of perfection and fun. Plan for waiting but worth it. We could walk to or from Shockoe Bottom even though this is across the James River.

There's 3 things you need to know before going to Mama Zu's 1). You'll wait 2 hours for a table if you aren't there when they open the doors, reservations or not. If you want to eat fast, head for the bar. 2). It's loud and very crowded. If the weather's bad, all the people waiting for tables are crammed... More

Everyone raves about this place but just didn't get it. It's good Italian food but not extraordinary. Very small and loud. A little over priced and doesn't take credit cards (a while back). I'd go with friends but wouldn't suggest it.

We first want to MamaZu's a couple of years ago with some friends who had eaten there before. We were forewarned about outside of the restaurant, the unfriendly wait staff and told not to ask too many questions. We had a wonderful dinner that night and many more since then. My husband and I decided to have dinner there this... More

I LOVE Mamma Zu's so much. I named this review "Old School Italian" because the atmosphere seems like the type of place The Godfather himself would eat at. It's very simple and by simple I mean not insanely fancy and "over the top" as many Italian restaurants are. They have by far the greatest Eggplant Parmesean you'll ever eat. The... More
