A great ethnic alternative with lots of dietary options

We found this restaurant while on a brief visit to Richmond. One member of our group had lots of dietary restriction (gluten free, vegan, tree nut allergy). It was perfect for us! Many food options and everything was very tasty. (one member commented that her lamb was a 'bit tough', but otherwise... read more

Addis is a very authentic Ethiopian restaurant in Richmond's Shocco Slip district. Ethiopian cuisine is based on the unique injira bread which is used as a utensil to eat a variety of spicy meat and vegetarian stews. One eats with the fingers. If Ethiopian dining is new to you, just jump right in!

We normally frequent Havana 59 across the street (also excellent), but it was closed. We saw the sign and, being adventurous and hungry, we passed on the neighboring diner and Thai places on either side. Best decision of the entire day!! The food here is phenomenal and the special way to eat Ethiopian food is fascinating. The lamb and chicken... More

We have only had Ethiopian food once before and decided to try Addis based on the reviews. We were not disappointed! The food was wonderful. The hostess helped us make selections. My husband chose two lamb and one beef dish and I chose 3 vegetable sides. I do not like lamb, but I LOVED both lamb dishes!! Our favorite vegetable... More

I love Ethiopian food, so I seek restaurants wherever I travel. Found Addis through reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor for Richmond. Was so impressed with the fantastic food that I had dinner there two nights in a row! Not only are the entrees delicious and the injera perfect, but they serve awaze sauce and powdered mimita spice on the... More

Located in the Riverfront area, adjoining the 17th Street Farmers' Market and near the recently restored Richmond Main Street Station, this relaxed and informal restaurant, with bar, is a great change from all the fast-food, Southern grills. For around $30, two of us had a fish dish and three vegetarian dishes, plus (Ethiopian) beer. There was a large but not... More

If you want Ethiopian in Richmond, DON'T go to Nile (which is terrible). Go here! Much better service, much more convenient parking, much better atmosphere.

We just returned from having lunch at this restaurant in Shockoe Bottom, Richmond. The food was very tasty and exotic. Lamb, beef, chicken and vegetables were part of our "injera" experience. Everything is serveed on a very large plate on a layer of injera bread. The food is eaten with injera bread folded around the food. No spoons, forks or... More

Well if you did not know Addis ababa means "new flower" in native Ethiopian language. So we ventured into this little restaurant in downtown cobbled stone Richmond to see what the food was like. I am a big fan of lamb and anything or anyone that makes it I am there at first and last bite. It took some time... More

I had the opportunity to dine here on Memorial Day. There wasn't much traffic that day and I was fearful that it could mean subpar food. I don't have extensive experience at Ethiopian restaurants but feel that the food here was among the best that I have had. The injera was perfect consistency. The vegetables were properly cooked and flavored.... More
