Arrive early so you don't have to wait. Small dining area but cozy and they treat you like family. Good selection of local beer. Menu is a la carte. I recommend the Mac and cheese.. Catfish was good. 2 regular size pieces lightly breaded and fried. Fillet not whole. I prefer whole but for a fillet this is good. My... More

The hostess/greeter was excellent. Very professional extremely pleasant. Takeout service very slow. The food only average. I ordered the fried trout and my husband the catfish and peach cobbler. The fish wasn't very good. The seasoning used makes or breaks fish. It just wasn't there. Too salty. It wasn't crispy. In fact a little soggy. We were both disappointed because... More

We visited Mama J's for a spur of the moment lunch. The restaurant is small but neat. We ate at the bar and we were glad because we had more space than we would have had at a table. The food is very good. We had the crab cake and the baked chicken entrees. They were delicious. The side dishes... More

Great food, great service. Everything we had was amazing! My husband had catfish and I had fried chicken. The Mac & cheese is unbelievable!

I love that that they had "real food". I am personally not into all the new fru=fru concoctions. Everything was cooked just right!

After arriving in Richmond in the late afternoon on a Monday, my boyfriend and I realized that we were trying to find food at restaurant limbo time; most places that were within walking distance for us were closed between 2 and 5pm. Not Mama J's, and thank goodness for us that they stay open all day. Our server (Clarissa is... More

I visited Mama J's for lunch twice in three days. The fried chicken was worth the 25 minute wait. It was crispy and well seasoned on the outside and very moist on the inside. The macaroni and cheese was also excellent. The butter cream cake with butter cream frosting topped off the meal very well. Now back to my diet.
