Good food, reasonably priced,in a warm and homey atmosphere.

Greeted in a very friendly and welcoming manner! Seated promptly amid a mixed crowd of young people, older couples, black and white. The space is not big but interesting and pleasant. We had an amazing experience at Mama J's! We had a party of 8 and they say us quickly, even though is a small space. We arrived just after opening and as the after church crown arrived. We ordered everything from the Hamburger (which is amazing), to the club sandwich, baked trout, the catfish sandwich and Fried Chicken. The fried... More

Wonderful homemade comfort food ... Love Mama's catfish, never greasy, always light and fluffy. Their greens are wonderful and mac and cheese is yummy! Very generous portions and friendly staff. Homemade desserts are delish! Call ahead, cuz they are busy all the time or go to dinner early.

Great staff and food! I order the meatloaf entrée, Mac n cheese, string beans and corn muffin...love soul food. Food was delicious and for dessert we order bread pudding...I was disappointed no rum sauce but lemon sauce was ok!

We got the fish and chicken with candy yams, green beans, potato salad, and mac & cheese. The chicken was ok but the fish was really good. They seasoned it very well. The sides were very good also.

The food is delicious it's like having a real home cooked meal that will have you saying 'Oh my Lord this is good!' Only setback is that it is a small place but like I said its worth the wait.

Wow... where to start... so... this is literally a little "hole-n-the-wall" eatery. Not much space at all which causes for super loooonnnngggg wait times.... but oh my... it's sooooo worth it, especially if you like "down home" country soul food. If you've followed any of my other posts you know that I'm a foodie... so basically I love GOOD FOOD!... More

My mom came to visit after the holiday so we decided to eat dinner on a Thursday evening. We arrived around 6:00pm and had about a 15-20 minute wait. Once seated our meal took about 20 minutes and it did not disappoint. The catfish (2pieces) were enough to feed 2 people along with the delicious yams and green beans. The... More

Visited Mama J's during my stay in Richmond. Amazed at the dishes produced by this small cozy restaurant. The restaurant was packed, lines out the door on a Wednesday evening. It was truly worth the wait. I had the fried catfish platter, mac cheese, cabbage, seafood salad, peach cobbler corn bread and sweet iced tea. Everything was delicious, service was... More

Went in late June with family. While they don't take reservations, the wait is usually short. The food and service make up for it. If you are looking for authentic southern cooking in a laid back environment, this is worth the try. Reasonable prices for very good food.
