We found this restaurant through other Tripadvisor reviews and I am SO glad! Awesome real soul food--great southern cooking! Not full of spices or sauces--just food like you wish your mom made! Much better than "other" famous southern cooking restaurants. It was so good we ate here again on our return trip.

Just came back from a weekend in Richmond where I ate, danced, saw art and ate again. One of my eating stops was Mama J's. I see it gets well reviewed, so I'm not telling you anything new..just adding my own two cents. First, the wait. When we got there at 8:40 there was still a 45 minute wait. However,... More

Based on the Tripadvisor recommendation, A friend and I ate at Mama J's. And we were pleased. I had the fried catfish and seafood salad. Both were delicious. The food was just as you'd expect and delicious. Plus, the prices were reasonable. Our server was friendly and patient. Based on her recommendation, we both got the catfish. My Tom Collins... More

Followed the Tripadvisor recommendations to this place and we weren't disappointed. Arrived in the area to find the 2nd Street Party going on and a great atmosphere in the air. The restaurant was busy and we had to wait, but not as long as initially suggested, and by that time we wouldn't have gone anywhere else. Our server was very... More

I visited Mama J's on a Sunday afternoon with a friend and the food was absolutely fantastic. It opens at noon on Sundays and we arrived shortly after which was the best idea because not too long after our arrival the line formed. The restaurant is very small with a bar and several seating areas. The server was great! We... More

I enjoyed the atmosphere of this restaurant. Then the food came out and I was sold. I ordered the fried chicken with mac and cheese and greens as sides. YUM. The batter was crispy and chicken inside was moist and delicious. Then choosing from the beautiful cakes rounded out a great dinner out!

Went to Mama J's for lunch. It was busy but took just a few minutes to get a table. The staff was very friendly and the wait staff was helpful. I had the large catfish dinner with macaroni & cheese. My wife had a vegetable variety of greens, mac/cheese, sweet potato. Every dish was just really wonderful. The fried catfish... More

LOVE this place. This review is based on my first visit here. The place is small so I would consider an earlier dinner time and a bit of patience, it it well worth the wait. I had the fried chicken, greens and candied yams. PERFECT. I grew up in the south and it's hard to "soul" food on the west... More

We were looking for a new fun place to visit while passing through Richmond and fortunately referred to TA where we found some good reviews for MammaJ's. We each ordered the fried catfish, and it was some of the best we've had in a long while. All the sides and "fix in's" were great as well. We gave in to... More

This was a great Richmond find! Smallish (a dozen tables or so), comfortable, a tin ceiling, we sat at the bar and really enjoyed our catfish sandwiches (just the right amount of "fish" taste). But, when Mama bright out her black walnut cake, we just had to have a piece. Wow! It may have beaten the catfish!
