Went to Mama J's for lunch. It was busy but took just a few minutes to get a table. The staff was very friendly and the wait staff was helpful. I had the large catfish dinner with macaroni & cheese. My wife had a vegetable variety of greens, mac/cheese, sweet potato. Every dish was just really wonderful. The fried catfish... More

LOVE this place. This review is based on my first visit here. The place is small so I would consider an earlier dinner time and a bit of patience, it it well worth the wait. I had the fried chicken, greens and candied yams. PERFECT. I grew up in the south and it's hard to "soul" food on the west... More

We were looking for a new fun place to visit while passing through Richmond and fortunately referred to TA where we found some good reviews for MammaJ's. We each ordered the fried catfish, and it was some of the best we've had in a long while. All the sides and "fix in's" were great as well. We gave in to... More

This was a great Richmond find! Smallish (a dozen tables or so), comfortable, a tin ceiling, we sat at the bar and really enjoyed our catfish sandwiches (just the right amount of "fish" taste). But, when Mama bright out her black walnut cake, we just had to have a piece. Wow! It may have beaten the catfish!

Not the best Southern food I have ever had (see the Tea Room in Atlanta) but definitely very, very good. The best choices are the items on the menu with stars. The kitchen knows and cooks these best. I had fried catfish and my dinning partners had fired chicken. The sides are also good. There will be a wait enjoy... More

My mom and I came here based on the ratings of fellow TripAdvisee's. It was a Saturday night, so there was a bit of a wait, ...a good sign when I restaurant is full early on. Our server was perfectly friendly and helpful, even gave me a sample of the candied yams. (Nice, but too much like dessert for my... More

Visited on a Sunday, which meant a small wait. I'm so glad we waited because the food was delicious! The catfish was outstanding. Large portion sizes, so be careful to save some room for cake. A neat atmosphere and friendly staff. We'll be back!

This cute little restaurant has great charm. It has old world Richmond appeal while being clean modern and has a full bar! Everyone was very friendly and nice. Sat at the bar for lunch and ordered the specialty of catfish with seafood salad a corn muffin and homemade tartar sauce. The catfish was fried perfectly with nice breading breading and... More

I had the deep fried shrimp starter and then the fried chicken with mac n cheese entree (deep fried overload!) the food was amazing and the portion size was large. I had peach cobbler to go, and my criticism of this would be the inclusion of cinnamon- i really dont like this spice and i found it a bit over... More

Great food, excellent prices, very friendly staff. They are always busy so you may have to wait to be seated but overall experience and food are well worth the wait.
