Great meal in Richmond!

The restaurant was very busy but we were seated almost immediately. The food was delicious - I wish we had had enough room to try dessert!

Small place. Long line. But the food and service were great! One order of meatloaf consisted of 3 large slices covered in gravy. Yum. The mac n cheese was perfect. The corn muffin was probably the best corn muffin I've ever eaten. The bartenders were very friendly and accommodating.

We took a chance on Mama J's because we had never been there before; but, after checking out the menu online, my daughter and I knew we had to have lunch there while in Richmond on a business trip to Williamsburg. We ended up eating a little later in the day than we had planned because we didn't figure in... More

Down home, southern, soul food. Really delicious food. It's very popular with locals and visitors, so the wait can be a little long. Pleased my palate, so it was worth the wait.

I have been here many times before, exceptional food. The catfish is plain amazing they have great Mac and cheese! But last time I went there 3 out of 7 of my family members got sick after eating the greens (side) and the fried chicken wasn't as good as I expected... Overall I actually wouldn't suggest for you to go... More

This is a charming place with great wait staff and over the top food. We had the fried chicken with yams and the fired catfish with mac and cheese. It was delicious! Our waitress was very friendly and kept the sweet tea flowing. There were people constantly waiting to get in and yet the quality of the service and food... More

Finally tried this restaurant for lunch after hearing many folks in Richmond talk about it. It's supposed to be 'southern home-cooking' which I suppose it is, but I was raised in southern VA and my mom's cooking is much better. Any other person or restaurant would have to be really good to compete with my mom. The service was also... More

Go for the fried chicken, mac and cheese with a big bowl of greens! Everything was excellent with wonderful service! Only thing is we had to put name on waiting list. Had to come back in hour and half! This was on a Monday! It was well worth the wait. Do not forget dessert!

Mama J's was simply great! The food was outstanding and the wait staff was absolutely terrific -- I've never felt so welcome in a restaurant. Conclusion: Go there, order lots of food, feel great (and stuffed) when you're done!

Mama J's is a must visit in our book. A group of five of us went on a Saturday night, and we found the atmosphere to be delightful, the food to be delicious and the staff to be informative and friendly. The entrees are quite big and everyone in our party ordered two sides - we had enough for dinner... More
