The coconut cake is to die for. We ended up purchasing the entire cake. There was a blackout in the neighborhood during my first visit. The staff/service never skipped a beat. Because they maintained their composure so everyone else. No one got up to leave or appeared alarmed. We used the flashlight on our cellphones and continued to enjoy our... More

My husband I were looking for a new place to eat and decided to head up to Mamma J's. I had beef tips with rice and he had catfish, mashed potatoes, cabbage and mac-n-cheese. The best of all was the catfish. The mashed potatoes were made from red potatoes and not the normal creamy whipped type, not what I expected.... More

I'm not sure if it's because of the time of day I went but I expected so much more. I've been hearing so much about this place that I just had to make sure it was on my list of places to go when I got to Richmond. The food was just okay even the regulars I went with agreed... More

I can clearly say without any hesitation this restaurant has the best soul food I've ever had. We did have to wait about 20 minutes, but it was definitely worth the wait. I had fried fish, and it was seasoned perfectly. I got the bread pudding to go, because I couldn't eat another bite, and that was delicious as well.... More

We went here for dinner on a Saturday night. The wait was about 30 minutes. All entrees are a la carte. I thought prices were reasonable, but I'm from a big city. I do wish places would include a side or two with entrees and not nickel and dime you with extra charges. We shared the fried catfish and fried... More

Very good food i had fried fish, seafood salad and mac and cheese. I don't eat seafood salad but I tried it and loved it.

The amazing food and service are worth writing about. I searched for soul food restaurants before my trip to Richmond but for some reason, this one did not pop up on the list. A staff person at the hotel suggested this restaurant, and it proved to be the best dining decision we could have made. We ended up going back... More

We found this restaurant through other Tripadvisor reviews and I am SO glad! Awesome real soul food--great southern cooking! Not full of spices or sauces--just food like you wish your mom made! Much better than "other" famous southern cooking restaurants. It was so good we ate here again on our return trip.

Just came back from a weekend in Richmond where I ate, danced, saw art and ate again. One of my eating stops was Mama J's. I see it gets well reviewed, so I'm not telling you anything new..just adding my own two cents. First, the wait. When we got there at 8:40 there was still a 45 minute wait. However,... More

Based on the Tripadvisor recommendation, A friend and I ate at Mama J's. And we were pleased. I had the fried catfish and seafood salad. Both were delicious. The food was just as you'd expect and delicious. Plus, the prices were reasonable. Our server was friendly and patient. Based on her recommendation, we both got the catfish. My Tom Collins... More
