While traveling we searched the web and found this amazing soul food restaurant. The food was cooked to order. We had the trout, catfish, crab cakes, and barbecue ribs. (Four separate dinners of course). The seafood salad, and yams were my personal favorite. The collard greens and cornbread were also good. The hostess was pleasant and very attentive. It was... More

My wife and I shared the fried chicken wingettes, spare ribs, and cat fish. The wingettes were absolutely perfect! The meat was fried to perfection and the crust was very tasteful and crispy. The homemade sauces were very, very good. I ordered the cat fish, since I read some people said it was the best cat fish ever. It was... More

Very possibly the best catfish ever ! And I have eat a lot of catfish. Very small, but quite unique Friendly staff. Food takes a while to get to table but well worth the wait! Don't visit Richmond without going to Mam J's!

read plenty of reviews on Mama J's. We decided to try it out, for a late father's day lunch (on a Sunday). I recommend others to arrive early because the wait could be 30 mins or more and the line is a bit long. There's really no waiting area. The restaurant dining area is cozy and a nice ambiance. As... Had a great lunch in a very crowded semi-upscale restaurant on North First St which is on the North side of Broad Street in downtown Richmond. The service was great, the hostess very interesting and elegant and the food was very good. Parking is not easy and they also do catering.

You can't beat a visit to Mama J's. The place is rather small, and there's usually a line, but the food is definitely worth the wait. The catfish and collards are a must. The servings are large, but make sure and save room for dessert. The peach cobbler can easily serve 3 people, and the slices of cake are huge... More

I have eaten here 5 times, I have stopped ordering the collards, every time mine were tough and had sugar in them, I like mine with ham, not sweet. Baked chicken is good, catfish good, pork roast and pork chop good. I find the Mac and cheese bland and not creamy. The rolls and muffins are good but don't expect... More

In Richmond for a seminar, this restaurant was within walking distance of my hotel and highly recommended. The place was packed with people in line inside the door! I think everyone at the seminar had gone come here for a southern meal. We had super-duper fried chicken and mac & cheese along with sweet tea, southern staples that did not... More
