Weekend Getaway

Just happened to drive by and see this place. It doesn't look like much on the outside or inside for that matter but the food was delicious. My husband ordered their famous chicken fried steak and he said it was great. I ordered a sandwich and it was good also.

I was very skeptical when my husband and I stopped here on a trip to Ft. Worth so I was really surprised at the quality of the food we ordered. You can get breakfast all day here but we ordered the Lady Bird sandwich which was a yummy grilled chicken breast with swiss cheese on Texas toast. Their desserts looked... More

Out running errands on a Sunday morning so stopped at the Hill Country Cupboard for breakfast. The special of the day was Chicken Fried Steak, with eggs, hash browns, and a biscuit. Not sure their claim of the World's Best Chicken Fried Steak is accurate, but it was still pretty good, and made a great breakfast. Service was down home... More

Had lunch here as it is right next to the Best Western we stayed at. Good chicken fried steak, etc. Pastries available, also homemade cobbler.

Decent food, albeit limited options, in an area without many restaurants. Service was friendly but far from fast and we were the only diners.

Very lively place for breakfast. Family friendly place especially when you have 2 years old travelling with you. We had coffee, orange juice , bacon , biscuit and 2 eggs each. I had vegetables omelette. Really good!

My family loves to eat here every time we go to Pedernales Falls. It isn't a fancy place, so we've come in after a day at the river with hats on and sunburns and don't feel embarrassed to be eating out. It is a quiet, quaint little place. It isn't the most appealing from the outside, but after you eat... More

Odd duck - you walk in, left side is unlit, right side is where you are seated. Ordered a hamburger steak w/jalepeno's and cheese. Meat was unseasoned, and just about room temperature. The mashed potatoes were likely fresh 4-5 hours earlier, and barely warm - the pinto beans? Yeah - little seasoning.

That's why you're here - to eat chicken fried steak. Not for decor, romance, ambiance or 5 star service. You know what you're getting - it's a small-town country cafe. Great, long-time local spot. Cops eat here, so you know it's good. One of the best chicken friend steaks ever (from a Native Texan).

If you are going through Johnson City, take the time to go into the city and see the sights. It is neat small town with a lot of history--including that of President Johnson. When you go into town, eat at the Pearl Street Brewery of the East Main Grill--both are far better than the Cupboard. It is not the cleanest... More
