A viable option for comfort food

Decent food, albeit limited options, in an area without many restaurants. Service was friendly but far from fast and we were the only diners.

Very lively place for breakfast. Family friendly place especially when you have 2 years old travelling with you. We had coffee, orange juice , bacon , biscuit and 2 eggs each. I had vegetables omelette. Really good!

My family loves to eat here every time we go to Pedernales Falls. It isn't a fancy place, so we've come in after a day at the river with hats on and sunburns and don't feel embarrassed to be eating out. It is a quiet, quaint little place. It isn't the most appealing from the outside, but after you eat... More

Odd duck - you walk in, left side is unlit, right side is where you are seated. Ordered a hamburger steak w/jalepeno's and cheese. Meat was unseasoned, and just about room temperature. The mashed potatoes were likely fresh 4-5 hours earlier, and barely warm - the pinto beans? Yeah - little seasoning.

That's why you're here - to eat chicken fried steak. Not for decor, romance, ambiance or 5 star service. You know what you're getting - it's a small-town country cafe. Great, long-time local spot. Cops eat here, so you know it's good. One of the best chicken friend steaks ever (from a Native Texan).

If you are going through Johnson City, take the time to go into the city and see the sights. It is neat small town with a lot of history--including that of President Johnson. When you go into town, eat at the Pearl Street Brewery of the East Main Grill--both are far better than the Cupboard. It is not the cleanest... More

We arrived at about 10:30 a.m. We were told to sit anywhere and after 5 minutes I grabbed 2 menus and utensils. It took awhile for our server to take our order, probably because it appeared she was the only person working in the restaurant. In fact, after we eventually ordered our meal, our server told us the cook had... More

My wife and I are staying at Miller's RV Park and saw an ad for HCC. We had to try the chicken fried steak. I told the waiter he "undersold" the chicken fried steak. It was great. I also highly recommend their homemade salsa with it. The sides were quite good and everything was resonably priced. Our meal was served... More

Now, admittedly, this is not your white tablecloth kind of eatery. If that is what you expect or want, try somewhere else. But, if you want a generous and hot comfort meal served with a smile, go to the Cupboard, which, while not fancy, is clean. The house specialty is chicken-fried steak, versions of which can be had for breakfast,... More

Rustic, but not in a good way. After a quick Trip Advisor search, we ate breakfast here to wait out bad weather as we travelled down 281 through Johnson City. The seats (duct taped booths) and interior were threadbare and worn, which gives the place an overall rundown appearance. That said, the service was friendly and very fast; and, our... More
