Our last visit to the Helmand was six years ago and as soon as we took a bite of the warm flatbread we wondered how we could have been gone for so long! The bread is served with a trio of dips and we heartily ate all the bread in the basket! The menu hasn't changed and that is a... More

This restaurant is such a treasure chest of dining delights. We started with the Kaddo, a pumpkin appetizer with garlic yogurt sauce and a ground beef sauce -- TO DIE FOR followed by Shorwa, a delicious lamb soup with fresh vegetables. My entree was very special -- Chappli Kabab -- two ground tenderloin patties -- tender, moist and accompanied by... More

We went on recommendation of friends . The food was good but on Saturday night they clearly want to turn the tables over as quickly as possible . They had us in and out - 2 courses and drinks in 55 minutes . Tried to order the appetizer separately but this is not allowed and so we got the entree.just... More

It was a double celebration: two family birthdays. The meat eaters were happy with dwopiaza; the vegetarian was happy with the veggie special. And the wine was delish and reasonably priced. Why not 5 stars? Because the service wasn't quite up to snuff. Specifically, while the evening was young (we arrived with a reservation before 6pm) and there were many... More

My husband and I visited The Helmand this evening; we made a reservation as they do get busy. We were seated immediately, though, and service was prompt and friendly. The decor is pretty, warm, and cozy with white tablecloths, pleasant lighting, and a quiet buzz of conversation. One can smell the bread baking, as there is a brick oven right... More

This restaurant purports to produce excellent Afghan food and they are not spoofing. I've had many experiences with Afghan cuisine and this is one of the best outside of Afghanistan itself. The bread was perfect. The soups were exquisite. The lamb was perfect. I'd go back there again in a heartbeat.

gorgeous food. We had a starter and main course each, and it was far too much for us Europeans to eat. I guess it's portion sized for locals, but safe to say it was fantastic quality. It brought back great memories of the cooking my Afgani' friend Kas used to make us. Deeply flavoured rice, perfectly cooked lamb, interesting veg...... More

We enjoyed two meals within a week here recently. Admittedly there are not many options in this vicinity of Cambridge however we thought the food ,setting, and service surpassed many eateries across the river in Back Bay. Lamb is the predominant meat on the menu, with many vegetarian options as well. The setting is quietly elegant with a fireplace in... More

We had a group of five people at the Helmand for dinner. The food was both interesting and tasty. Portions were large so when they brought our entree's having forgotten to bring our starters we were not too upset. Still, we were hoping to try some of their house specialty appetizers and missed out chance. I recommend this restaurant for... More

This is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere, if not THE favorite. I have been coming here for 15 years since my college days at MIT, so I've eaten here as a vegetarian and non-vegetarian and all the food is fantastic! My current favorites are the aush soup, kaddo, and the aushak. I also love the oven flatbread with assorted... More
