My companions and I ate here in July 2014. It was my first visit, although my husband and our friend had each been there several time. The atmosphere was comfortable, authentically Afghani. Each of our dishes was pronounced fantastic. Prices are reasonable. Parking is available in a lot across the street. Be sure to get a pass to put in... More

I first ate at the Helmand in SF 25 years ago. Ever since it has been one of my favorite restaurants. I also visited the Cambridge location twice during the past ten years. While the menu has not changed over the years and the creativity of the dishes no longer a surprise for me - the food remained simply excellent.... More

I ate here in June 2014 and I will definitely return. I had a pumpkin and eggplant dish that was excellent. Also, the bread that they give you is very good as well. The service was efficient, but lacked personality. While I would definitely recommend this restaurant to others, this Is more of a "midweek" restaurant that you would go... More

My son just graduated from MIT and I told him we would go anywhere he liked in Cambridge for a dinner celebration. I was shocked he picked an Afghan restaurant. I am a meat and potatoes guy from the mid west but I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The service was great and the atmosphere fitting for... More

Went to Helmand with my son, daughter-in-law and her parents. We had a great meal. The pumpkin dishes were all amazing! A few of us had vegetarian dishes and others had lamb and beef. Everything was great. We had good service and a really wonderful evening. This was our second visit to Helmand. I would definitely recommend it.

The staff were very friendly, and the atmosphere is fine. The food was average. I was expecting something more interesting and was disappointed. The food wasn't bad, just boring.

Range of excellent appetizers and main courses. Different from Arab food, different from Indian/Pakistani cuisine, Persian influence, but Afghan cuisine unique. Excellent grills, rice dishes, and many interesting vegetable dishes.

The food in Helmand is not bad, so if it's your first time, and you don't mind rude and unfriendly management, by all means try it. If you've eaten there before, don't expect any changes in the menu, including the oil-stained "specials" sheet. These specials have been on that list for the past eight years. Oh, and don't try to... It's always busy, so you'll need a reservation. I've only eaten in the restaurant once, but have enjoyed take-out on a number of occasions. As soon as you walk in the door, you are not only greeted with a calming ambiance, but the scent of the wood fired oven is cozy and heavenly. Everything I've had is so delicious, I... More

This place is fantastic. This is great food and quite reasonable. They even make flatbread in a wood fired oven in the middle of the restaurant in front of you. The food is fantastic! The lamb is great but one of the winners is the pumpkin with ground beef and yogurt sauce appetizer. The other grilled meats are equally good... More
