Unfortunate experience after several wonderful meals

I brought my husband here for a birthday dinner - we have eaten here multiple times and have always had great food, great service. Before we came in tonight I checked the menu online and saw that they have gone to a four course prix fixe. I also noticed that there seemed to be no dishes (other than... read more

The service and ambiance were great. But the food was not. My piece of fish in the monkfish chowder was salty and overcooked. The escargot appetizer was just greasy and inedible. The beet salad and duck were both good, but the duck came with an uninspired accompaniment. Not what you expect for the price. Dessert was delicious, but hardly made... More

The host was great-- he led us cheerfully to our table. From there, it was basically downhill. We had a late reservation, so decided to order wine by the glass--rather than the bottle--and to split several things rather than gorge. Our waiter was clearly unimpressed with this "light order" and let us know it--he scowled, grunted, and barely acknowledged us.... More

We had an exceptional meal in "Hungry Mother" while visiting Cambridge from London last year, so we decided to go back. I had been dreaming about the cornbread the entire 2014, and although it was still good, it was not the same as I remembered it, not as moist may be... My main dish was a winged game, I think... Made reservations for a Saturday night. Sat at a small table upstairs. Had looked at the menu online and was excited to try some vegetarian options. The menu online wasn't updated and there were no vegetarian options on the actual menu. Our waitress said the chef could make gnocchi with vegetables or take the ham out of the shrimp and... More

This was the best meal I had all year. The beef tongue was out of this world amazing. we ordered a second plate of it. The tagliatelle was just like my moms, rustic and so flavorful. The corn bread/quail egg/charcutier plate was the perfect balance of southern and french. I cant wait to go back. We also had some sort... More

I could imagine giving 3 or 5 "stars" for this place, so I settled on 4. Three if you did not especially care to eat anything on the extremely limited menu or five if you liked the selection of meals provided. Everything is prepared well and the quality of the ingredients is very high. The staff was efficient and pleasant.... More

I'm not sure how such a variety of excellent dishes comes out of such a small kitchen, but this place manages to produce some of the best Southern food that this native Virginian has ever had north of the Mason-Dixon line. Part of this place's appeal is due to the fact that most dishes are not simply replicas of classic... More

There was no rush at Hungry Mother. Every step took time which was great for us because we had a lot to talk about. Do not expect a quick meal. I started dinner with a nice "green" chartreuse. A tasty grits dish followed, then collards and catfish. I've been a catfish fan since sitting next to Miss Catfish of Mississippi,... More
