It is hard to find a local and reasonable neighborhood restaurant in Ballard these days. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, but have been living in the States for the past 2 years. Couldn't have been more excited to know there was a PR restaurant in Seattle when I visited WA for Thanksgiving. Everything was delicious (and very authentic)! The rice, the beans, the tostones, but especially, the pastelon...to die for! We also... More

This is incredibly good Puerto Rican fare. Excellent plaintains and the dishes are creative and well prepared. The noise level almost made it seem good to be on a street with the car exhaust. The wait staff are excellent. Almost anything on the menu would be good here. If you are young and hip this is the place. If you... More

I live in Colorado and wish that there was a restaurant that compared to La Isla. Each time I visit Ballard, I eat there at least twice during my visit. Beans and rice, Lentil Stew, Yucca Frittes, and Tostones are my faves. Sit outside and people watch too.

I have lived in Puerto Rico my whole life and the plate I was served was truly comida criolla. They definitely got it right. The beans were amazing and so was the biftec encebollado. Not to mention the tostones and mojito sauce. The best comida criolla dinner I have had in a long time. Congratulations to the chef.

We went to explore the Ballard neighborhood for lunch and get away from the downtown and tourist crowds. La isla is a great find. The rice seafood soup is fabulous, the sauces light and wonderful and the plantains terrific. We just couldn't eat more but can't wait to go back and taste more dishes!

This is the listed menu item I had: "PERNIL BOWL- lunch favorite of our slow roasted pork shoulder marinated for days and hand pulled atop a bed of arroz con gandules. Served with tostones, mojito sauce and mojito flamboyan! " Well, it looks amazing, right? But in reality, not quite. I had a few bites of the food and had... More

We showed up on a weekend without reservations and were seated after a brief wait. The servers were friendly and had good advice for food and drink. The plantain lasagna (Pastelon) should not be missed.

La Isla was busy, but not full on a beautiful Sunday early evening. They have several tables outside, as well as a sunny counter with stools to have a drink and a snack. We sat inside at a table by the window. First impression: dirty window sill with small chunks of food on it! Gross. The Happy Hour menu had... More

We went on the recommendation of a local - after considering more prosaic options - and all in all it was the best choice we could have made. The food is Caribbean (the island referenced is Puerto Rico) and as you'd expect plays with lime, mango, peppers. The three of us chose the chicken stew, the grilled salmon and the... More
