Old Hawaii in the Heart of Kona

Sure, there are are newer, showier resorts on the outskirts of town, but if you want to relive the era of funky Old Hawaii in a budget-friendly, walkable downtown location, consider staying at the Royal Kona Resort. A local recommended the bar here as one of the best spots to relax with a Maitai and watch the sun set. We weren't disappointed. The bar is located right on the water. The cocktail list was extensive, most around $9 and the traditional Maitai was great. We arrived 20 minutes before sunset and were still able to get a... More

I liked the location of the property, I hated the irritation of trying to communicate with the front desk staff.

We went on a Thursday because we were told of the great happy hour. While they did have 5 dollar Mai Tai's, that is the only cheap thing they had. They charged 5.50 for a glass of draft and they didn't give out beer or happy hour prices so we didn't know the price until the bill came. The food... More

The hotel has a great location however it has seen better days. We had several issues with our room and while maintenance was great about fixing them they showed a trend. The hotel only fixes items that are broken over care and repair as left until failure. The staff were polite.

We stayed at the Royal Kona using Diamond points so can't comment on the value. Great view from our room. In its day this would have been the place to stay. Now though it is crying for some paint, flooring and oil for the wood trim. Beyond the tired look however were positives. The staff (except in the bar) were... More

Stayed here for a day room and found the pool great. They have a ocean pool that is exclusive to guests and is fresh ocean water trapped in a rocky bay. Wonderful swim without the waves of the open sea. Add Don's Mai Tai bar to the mix and there is a great mix of why you should stay here.... More

We thought we would try Don The Beachcomber as this was the origin of the Mai Tai. Not only was it great but they also offered a Mai Tai sampler. The kids were able to use the pool while we sat next to the pool at the bar. Great atmosphere and food. Do not miss this gem.

As a family we decided to stay at a resort and this is the one. For 3 people it was spacious and very clean albeit a little old, but who cares. The condo had all the amenities that you would need. Home from home. From the onsite cafe, you could see a wonderful set. Staff were very helpful and always... More

The luau was great. The entertainment was very nice with a lot of history. My sons got asked to participate with the dancers. Plenty of food and drinks.
