Big Hawaiian Plate Lunches

The servings are HUGE!, Always packed with Locals, so good indicator of Local Flavors. Sadly, they discontinued their BEST dessert ever! The caramel Banana Split, with Kona Coffee, Vanilla Bean and Macnut Chocolate Ice Creams.... Bring it back please!

We ate there twice, 10 days apart. Fully enjoyed our choices both times. Most of the patrons were local families. Prices were reasonable, a good value.

We had breakfast at the Big Island Grill. The waitress was wonderful and was very patient with us as we asked questions. My husband had some thing called Saimin which is a soup with pork, shrimp, wontons, etc. He ate it with hot mustard and thought it was delicious! We also had the Hawaiian french toast. Hawaiian bread is sweet... More

It might be a bit telling that there were only tourists, no locals, sitting at tables when we walked in but my husband really wanted short ribs. He was not disappointed but said they were just average. I chose the coconut shrimp salad, which had deep fried shrimp on skewers on top of a bowl of greens, cucumber & tomato.... More

This was our first eating experience in Kona when we arrived. There was a line out the door on a Wednesday night at 8 pm. We had the beef teriyaki, pork, fried chicken, fries and mud pie. It was not only delicious but a great intro to the islands food. The mud pie is an absolute must. The only thing... More

If you want to experience local food, but a step up from just the ordinary plate lunch, and better quality then "L & L" ( a plate lunch joint) than big Island grok for you m own by a classmate of mine, and he has done good. Nothing fancy, real casual sit down dining. Good price. In parking lot of... More

I got the small saimin, and it was HUGE! It was in a deliciously flavored dashi with char siu pork, scrambled egg, and yummy little dumplings. I really want to try everything on their extensive menu. This may be my new favorite restaurant!

We asked our check in person for a reasonable restaurant that locals use. She recommended this one. We have eaten dinner there 2x so far this trip. Portions are large & great value. I order the 1/2 portion of the catch of the day which is plenty . The Hawaiian mud pie portion is more than enough for 2 &... More
