This is a nice lake in the Custer State Park. Swimming, fishing and a very pleasant walk around the perimeter. Restrooms and parking.

Located within Custer State Park, so expect to pay an entrance fee. Short distance from Hills City taking some switchback roads (paved) so enjoy the scenery. Busy place, but clear water, that takes your breath away (cool to cold) but once use to the water its great. Wonderful place for kids and adults, as there are kayaks and paddleboats to... More

My family enjoys dining at historic lodges, and Sylvan Lake is so beautiful that we had high hopes for this outing. However ... even though we had a reservation and arrived 15 minutes early, we were seated 10 minutes late. Our salad was served on warm plates (seemed to be directly out of the dishwasher), and our food ranged from... More

I come from an area where there are gorgeous lakes, but this takes the cake. The lake is held in by "foothills" of the Needles Mountains, so it is surrounded on three sides by tall rocks, giving it a unique appearance. Our family took the 1 mile path around the lake. There is some rock hopping involved on this path... More

This is a must see if you are in the Black Hills area. The lake is gorgeous and behind the rocks is an area to explore.

My family really enjoyed all the activities at Sylvan Lake, especially the hiking trail that goes around it. What a great family activity with no cost other than your park fee. Make sure you take the hiking trail that goes on the back side of the lake. It is a moderate hike but well worth it. You get to walk... More

The hike around the lake is great! It is a very manageable hike with limited inclines. Paddle boats, kayaks and canoes are available for rent.

So, it is a cozy atmosphere, no view of the lake from the outside dining or anywhere else, but the inside is very nice. That is the end of my compliments for the lodge's restaurant, because they took so long to even seat us that we left. The dining room was half empty and they still took forever to seat... More

I love going to Sylvan Lake, beautiful views and nice trails to hike. Good place to go to Harney Peak from. Nice place to swim in late summer.

This is a beautiful lake and is close to the Needles area of the Custer Park which consists of amazing rock formations. We stopped at the Sylvan Lake Lodge for lunch; a classy restaurant, tables out on the porch (but no view except for trees) and an affordable menu. The food was very good and reasonably priced. The waitress was... More
