Great, authentic French bistro

We hadn't been here in a while, and for the life of me I don't know why. The food's always great -- better in recent years -- and it's got a really unique atmosphere that reflects the old New Orleans neighborhood -- sort of a bohemian vibe, without the class warfare and reverse snobbery that you... read more

What shines here is the elegant yet simple preparation of fresh, seasonal ingredients. New Orleans has lots of great restaurants, but the recent tendency has been to be "over the top" with chefs trying to outdo each other, often with unusual combinations or excess seasoning. So Café Degas is refreshing in its approach, more mimicking the fare of the French... More

Our plan wasn't to have dinner at Cafe Degas, so I was glad when we got a reservation for the same night (we called at 6:30pm and they said they'd have a table ready in 20 minutes). Because it was a change of plans, I was dressed casually and once I got there I realized most people go for shirts... More

Our group of 11 had dinner here last day of jazz fest. They were harried but accommodating. We made a reservation a few days in advance. Location is just outside of the fairgrounds in a funky neighborhood. The food is french bistro, plentiful and very good across the board. We had rack of lamb perfectly cooked to med rare. The... Make sure you have a reservation. This is a small, cramped place and there's usually a long line waiting for a table. The food's the reason for this. Always enjoy our meals here when in NOLA.

We loved eating at Degas. It feels like you are in a tree house with the wood ceiling and walls and huge open windows covered with clear heavy plastic. It was raining and very romantic. We had small appetites that night so we settled on the French Onion Soup and a salad. Delicious! Good cocktails and wine. Only wish we... More

Went with a group of six on a Thursday night. Place was pretty full--usually a good sign. However, the food in general did not live up to our expectations. One dish in particular, the short ribs, typifies for me the problems with this place. A generous portion of bone in short ribs were sitting atop a bunch of kinda cold,... More

The food is fantastic, imaginatively prepared, and the ambience can't be beat. We were on a covered porch, next to a tree. Service was impeccable. Walked to City Park afterwards to cap off a truly lovely afternoon. Can't wait to visit Cafe Degas again on our next trip to NOLA.
