French at its best!

Small, somewhat unobtrusive on Esplanade in NO, this is the real thing! A bistro-type atmosphere, but great French cuisine with a New Orleans twist. This is a busy local neighborhood restaurant with lovely lights in the trees on the street. When you walk in the bartender scowls at you, as does the reception. Overcrowded is an understatement and yes their a/c blows ice cold air everywhere. The unhappy service staff kept bumping into my chair until after the tenth time I made it clear... More

My wife and I made reservations at Cafe Degas on June 10th. We were seated in the 'main' dining room. The AC was blowing so hard that I had to go out to our car to get a jacket for my wife. This was a minor inconvenience. We ordered drinks, appetizers and main courses. The tables are spaced tightly buy... More

What shines here is the elegant yet simple preparation of fresh, seasonal ingredients. New Orleans has lots of great restaurants, but the recent tendency has been to be "over the top" with chefs trying to outdo each other, often with unusual combinations or excess seasoning. So Café Degas is refreshing in its approach, more mimicking the fare of the French... More

We hadn't been here in a while, and for the life of me I don't know why. The food's always great -- better in recent years -- and it's got a really unique atmosphere that reflects the old New Orleans neighborhood -- sort of a bohemian vibe, without the class warfare and reverse snobbery that you sometimes get in funky... Our plan wasn't to have dinner at Cafe Degas, so I was glad when we got a reservation for the same night (we called at 6:30pm and they said they'd have a table ready in 20 minutes). Because it was a change of plans, I was dressed casually and once I got there I realized most people go for shirts... More

Our group of 11 had dinner here last day of jazz fest. They were harried but accommodating. We made a reservation a few days in advance. Location is just outside of the fairgrounds in a funky neighborhood. The food is french bistro, plentiful and very good across the board. We had rack of lamb perfectly cooked to med rare. The... Make sure you have a reservation. This is a small, cramped place and there's usually a long line waiting for a table. The food's the reason for this. Always enjoy our meals here when in NOLA.
