Cheap and good

Afghan food can be very, very good, and it was at Kabul on busy, tourist-heavy, State St in Madison. Our food was well and interestingly spiced; there was plenty of it; the service was first rate; and the prices low. This is not high end urban dining, but it was excellent ethnic food in an... read more

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner of chicken stuffed with spinach and feta in a raspberry reduction sauce. They do have a great wine list too. Staff were pleasant. This restaurant is located on the second floor and is nicely decorated. And after dinner you can walk along State street and shop.

My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner here. I had the curried chicken with rice. It was excellent. They have two kinds of chutney, which were both great. We were surprised by the broad wine list for an Afghan restaurant. I'd definitely go back.

Our family was here a few times a couple years back at their old location, and we were pleased to see that their food remains as good and authentic as ever. All our dishes were very good; my lamb kabobs were tasty and tender and the Afghan bread is excellent. The new location doesn't quite have the charm of the... More

Customers of the original site, we were sad when Kabul's disappeared and so glad to rediscover across the street and upstairs. It was quiet on a weeknight and we wondered if old fans have noticed it again? Our lamb kabobs were as good as ever with fresh bread and my favorite yogurt sauce on the salad. It was a treat... Everything we had was fresh and well-prepared, but the standout was the ashak--an appetizer. We had the version with vegetable sauce, and we added a bit of spice from the condiments on the table. I'm craving it right now! (For what it's worth, I've since tried this dish in a couple of restaurants in New York--and Kabul's was better.) If... More

We needed to find a quick lunch around the University and had reconciled ourselves to fast food or the Brat pub over the road, when we walked upstairs to Kabul. Much more interesting menu than we had anticipated. The Burani (aubergine) was excellent, and the karayi (lamb stew) tasty. You can safely skip the Turkish white, which we tasted for... More

If you are fan of bland vegetarian dishes, this is the place for you! The flavors must be very shy, as they never make it out of the kitchen. Nice ambiance, great servers, but too bad the food is nothing special. Eleven bucks for a plate of boiled potatoes and carrots? With the plethora of great restaurants on State Street,... More

We had dinner before a show at the Overture Center; left ourselves 1 1/2 hrs. We both ordered the lemon/lime mint vodka cocktail that reminded us of Oman in the Middle east minus the vodka! The food was really good and the atmosphere was enjoyable. I thought the service was a bit slow and it wasn't busy.It was a Sunday... More
