We stopped in to get a good deli sandwich. The food was very poor, cafeteria style. The decor is kind of Pee Wee's playhouse meets Horders. If you have kids, they will love it and it is pretty cheap. If you don't have kids, do yourself a favor and go to Dexter's around the corner.

This place used to have the best food around and the prices were very reasonable. This is no longer true. The 3 of us placed an order to go. My order was chicken strips and fries. The fries were gushy and mealy, the chicken strips were tasteless, flat, not much meat at all. Culvers is better at half the price.... More

Ella's has had a large menu with good food for decades. The décor is entertaining and has been updated over the decades to show both old and new pop culture characters in mechanized and still poses. The only down-side is the weekend birthday party groups (unless you are one of them) which tends to slow the service considerably. If you... More

I've gone with my children and nieces and nephews many times. It has a fun carousel with colorful animals. If you want to entertain the kids and enjoy some fun and wonderful sundaes, this is the place. If you're looking for haute cuisine-leave the kids home and go somewhere else.

Wonderful deli full of antique mechanical toys, ice cream parlor and outdoor vintage Merry-go-round. If you want something that's truly a Madison classic this place is for you. Very family friendly hence can be a bit noisy. Great for kids and kids at heart. Very good food too.

Ella's Deli is one of a very few delicatessen-style restaurants in Madison, and sadly, it has fallen mightily since it's heyday. While the East Washington Ave space is still mega-kitschy, with all kinds of comic and literary characters flying around (literally) on the ceiling, the food just isn't nearly as good as it used to be. I mean, really...if you... More

Oh, Ella's. Brought the kids in on our way out of town for a nostalgic trip back to my own childhood...agree with other reviewers, unfortunately, that I'm not sure they've cleaned the toys (or restroom) since then. You gotta love the still-gigantic menu with lots of meat or vegetarian options. But the truth is that none of us finished our... More

This is a place where people make the mistake to allow that the WOW factor (multiple toys, decor, etc) cloud their appreciation for the quality, taste and presentation of the food. I read the other day a review from a fellow traveller, and I thought... Is this the same place I've been countless times?? Come in! I won't deny that... More

I've been enjoying Ella's for decades! As a young person myself and with my kids. Good food. Great ice cream and loads of entertaining things to look at at every turn.

This place is a bit hard to describe. From its huge menu to its quirky decor and the carousel outside the door, it just has to be experienced. Kids will have so much to look at, you may have trouble getting them to concentrate on their food, but they'll have a blast. The portions are big and the quality is... More
