A little disappointed

We looked forward to a visit to Essen Haus based on what friends had said. I can't say I'd return. The food was average. I ordered Sauerbraten. Though the beef was tender, it was very bland. The German potato salad was the best thing on my plate. The red cabbage lacked the zing of vinegar and... read more

Jäger Schnitzel was very tasty and nice portion size. Beer was great with numerous selections. Waitress provided fast and efficient service. Good authentic German food like mom used to make. The basket of soft pretzels were a nice touch in place of a bread basket.

Visited on the day of a local fireworks celebration, that was expected to draw hundreds of viewers to the neighborhood, so made a reservation, then came early, as we wanted to get to the ticketed location early, as they expected a sell-out. Wanted a better meal than fast food from a tent vendor. Spouse had Wurst platter; I had the... More

Always looking for good German food and chose EH as the first dining option on visit to Madison. Menu looked good and ordered the top listing on the menu, Schweinelendchen in a Pfefferam Sauce. Instead of the expected tender succulent pork tips in a flavorful peppercorn sauce, got a large glop of tough, old tasting pork pieces in a sour... More

We went there and tried a number of dishes. The complimentary soft pretzels looked all wrinkly like they were thawed and several times reheated but hey they were free. The cheese curds we ordered were served cold but good tasting. My Schwein Haxen was probably the worst I've ever had, soggy and fatty and luke warm. Here was no crusty... More

Stopped here on a cross country trip that took us through Madison. My husband and I both love German food so I filtered in Tripadvisor and found this. It did not disappoint. The service was fast and friendly. The waitress brought out free samples of several side dishes for us to try. We both were very pleased with our food.... More

The Essen Haus does not lack on providing adequate amounts of food BUT it is just below average. my pork chops were so well done, i could have used them for a hockey puck! extremely dry!! my family agreed that the food was just not that good. Service was excellent however!! no complaints on that. Based on this meal, would... More

I like to go to the Essen Haus on Saturday to listen to polka. It's a very fun place, and an upbeat crowd. This place houses regulars to tourists. Food is good, service is great. (and I love the traditional dirndlkleider and lederhosen)

I must say I didn't know what to expect upon arrival at this older establishment. Yet inside, it was fun, food good, service great and atmosphere authentic.
