Description: Bali Asli is located in Gelumpang village, near the town of Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem regency, in the North East of Bali. About 2 hours drive from the airport, and 30minutes from Candidasa village, and 30minutes from Amed village. Nestled in the foot hills of Mount Agung, Bali’s most sacred mountain, surrounded by rice fields, there is not a building to be seen. Bali Asli promotes Balinese cuisine and culture without exploiting it or it’s people. We embrace our community, supporting those who fish, farm and forage in the near by fields, ocean and jungle. Our menu offers authentic Balinese food using a traditional Balinese style kitchen, cooking on wood-fired, mud brick stoves, allowing the real flavours of Bali to shine. Most of our ingredients are either grown in our garden, in our neighbour’s garden or purchased from the local market The cooking school runs unique classes themed on “a day in the life of...” every class includes an adventure into local areas off the beaten track. Weather it is learning how to plant rice or plough with a cow, fishing in a jukung canoe and cooking on an open fire or making cocktails from cashew nut wine, our students always leave with fond memories and new skills to experiment with when they get home.

Go here - this place is inspirational...!!! I don't particularly like Balinese cuisine but the food here is very special as is Penny, the extraordinary Aussie gal who has set this place up. Very traditional, super fresh cooked Balinese food & very reasonably priced. Adequate wine list & all the Bintang you could desire. Make sure you use the restrooms... More

I still don't know if this is authentic Bali cooking but I don't mind. The Australian owner's take on the local Megibung (communal meal) is enough for me. The ingredients are sourced out the back door and the resulting shared meal is a revelation of flavours and textures. I think it represents good value for the work and resources involved... More

Recently visited Bali Asli as part of a week long cooking tour of Bali. Firstly, we trekked through the surrounding area to see some flora and fauna and meet some locals who were kind enough to allow us to visit their homes. This was followed by a hands on cooking lesson under the tutelage of the owner, Penny. Great way... More

We were recommend Bali Asli by an Australian living in Bali and we sure are glad we made the effort and went. Our driver Made was unsure of where it was so rang the restaurant, got directions and booked us in. What a wonderful place set peacefully on its own on top of a hill, the views were outstanding, including... More

Had lunch here after a trek. The atmosphere was peaceful, calm, with beautiful and amazing views over the paddy fields to the mountains. Even the view from the loo was amazing and different, with one side completely open to the elements but completely private. The food was the best by far that I tasted in Indonesia and beautifully explained by... More

Were staying in the Candidasa area as part of a scuba diving holiday, and heard about the wonderful experiences offered at Bali Asli. Signed up via phone about 48 hours before our visit. Penelope led our group of 6 on a 2-hour trek through small rural villages, pointing our local spices, nuts, beans, and other crops along the way. Visited... More

It was an early pick up from Sanur @ 6:30am, but an interesting drive out to Bali Asli - great driver arranged by them. We then were driven to the market in Amalpura which was interesting, with a great insight to daily life of a Balinese Woman who would do this everyday. Then back to Bali Asli and made the... More

My sister Andrea and I joined the Day in the Life of a Fisherman tour by Penny at Asli. Fabulous! Penny arranged transport for us from Umalas (near Seminyak). It took 2 hrs to get to White Sand Beach but it went quick as we enjoyed the views along the way and chatted to our driver who was really informative... More
