Good hot food!

Arrived later in the day, the staff suggested we try the fish/special of the day which was very good! I feel this is a place that locals visit often as the staff knew people by their names.

If you want something fancy, to be fawned over, or you need your Latte to have just the perfect consistency.....stay away. If you want a good breakfast, served quickly with polite service.....stop by. You won't find any Mexican food (the border referred to is the Canadian border) but the breakfasts are quite good, plentiful, and affordable. We've gone here for... More

Stop and enjoy an excellent breakfast that is home cooking at its best. The breakfast potatoes are delicious and not greasy. The pancakes are the size of the plate so one is usually sufficient for me. Friendly service, great coffee, and a favorite for locals and tourists alike!

Good breakfast, great service. Small cafe, with bench seating. Herring and eggs available in season (my husband loves it, not me..) Restaurant serves both breakfast and lunch - open early in the morning, not open for dinner. Not a "fancy" restaurant, but definitely family friendly. Would recommend a stop if you are in the area!

The last morning in Grand Marais we stopped for breakfast and I wished I had discovered this restaurant earlier. The portions were huge. I had two eggs, 4 slices of bacon, fried potatoes and 2 slices of wheat toast. I could have substituted a pancake for the toast. When the overhard eggs arrived, they were hot and cooked just like... Average breakfast. Service was good but the tables were dirty- had a film of dirt. If you want a basic egg breakfast, then this is ok.

Usually, my husband and I can tolerate terrible coffee (knowing that there is better coffee nearby) IF the food accompanying the coffee is good. Food was only average and the coffee was dishwater. Not a destination for us in the future. That said, at least our waitress was funny and friendly, joking about the weather. We tipped her well, but... More

My husband and I, along with another married couple, were staying at Lutsen for a wedding. We went up to Grand Marais to grab breakfast. We first stopped at an enjoyable Farmer's Market across the street and purchased some local fare. As we entered SOB, all of the tables were full so we waited in the small entry way for... More

Don't expect elegance or fancy food at South of the Border, but if you're looking for solid, down-home eats with warm service and a reasonable price, this is the place. First off, this is not a Mexican restaurant--that's across the highway at Hughie's Tacos. South of the Border is an American-style breakfast/lunch cafe (hours 5-2), run by what appears to... More

The door slams shut every time someone enters or exits. The food is cheap and cheap tasting. the hash browns had almost no flavor. We doctored them up with salt, pepper and catsup but that only made them edible. My daughter said her pancake was okay but that is hardly a stellar review.
