Gen....Brooklyn Sushi

Went here last night for my son's birthday. Party of 5. Had reservations at 6. Seated immediately. Pretty empty when we got there but was packed when we left. Very attentive wait staff. Had some interesting beers in bottles and draft. Had a nice selection of sake. Started with some... read more

I'll start by admitting that I'm not a fan of sushi, however this isn't a problem as Gen features an extensive menu. I've had the gyoza and yakiniku, both of which were delicious. The gyoza was cooked to perfection, and the yakiniku was very flavorful. There's also a pretty nice selection of a Sake, though I usually just go for... More

If you are a vegetarian/vegan sushi lover Gen is for you. This restaurant has numerous options that go far and beyond the typical "vegetable roll" that other places serve.

My mother always accuentated the positive before the negative and I will do my best to follow. Convenient and new to the bloosoming Prospect Heights a few years back. We tried it and like it and we were particularly fond of the green tea ice cream for dessert. But on our fifth/six trip, we observed the sushi chef coughing repeatedly... More

This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood. I have been going here for years and it's the best! I do not eat meat or seafood so I have only had the vegetarian dishes but I am always pleased with whatever I order. I usually get the sweet pumpkin roll and the agedashi. I love coming here for brunch!... More

I LOVE IT when simple things are done sooooo well that they become special. That's Gen! Had deep fried Salmon in a Pita with cabbage and arugula. Salmon was crispy on the outside, moist and succulent on the inside. Shouldn't have been something to rave about, but it was. An instance of a chef making every aspect of even a... More

It is a small place so if you have a large crowd it may be inconvenient to seat all together. Also it get very warm inside.

I live across the street and it's not just the convenience that brings me to Gen on a regular basis. I would seek it out even if I lived in another borough. The sushi and fish are always extremely fresh. The non-fish dishes are excellent as well. Their daily specials are the way to go, as they always make me... More

We are pretty picky when it comes to Japanese restaurants and were psyched to come across Gen in Prospect Heights. Great variety on the menu from nabe (soups) to salmon collar to sashimi. Food is authentic, staff is really nice, and the place has a homey feel. If we lived in the neighborhood, this would definitely become our go-to spot!

My girlfriend almost stopped me from writing a review for Gen because we want to keep it to ourselves. But Gen is awesome!! We went after a Japanese friend told us that it was authentic. It is. That and the sushi is soooo good! The fish is so fresh that it has ruined us for other sushi joints (which is... More
