Well renowned, so our family wanted to try it

I am sometimes hard on fine dining establishments because so often the portions are so small and I prefer larger portions. Again, the food here was great but not fantastic and the price is up there. You may not find if you don't know where to look. The only thing visible from the street is a sign and a set of stairs leading down to the basement restaurant. Once there the atmosphere is elegant casual. I was celebrating a birthday and Alligator Soul did not disappoint. The shrimp and grits were excellent and my niece's mussels... More

We went to Alligator Soul for dinner and it was fantastic! The restaurant is a friendly little place, downstairs from the main street. Our waiter (Davis) was knowledgeable and very happy to talk about the food. The food itself was really good. I had deep fried goat cheese fritters then "the little hobo" ribeye steak (which is huge) and tempura... More

A superb meal served with a smile and a story? I'm beyond glad to hear that! It sounds like from the kitchen to the waitstaff, everyone on our team did their part in leaving you with a great impression. I'm really proud of them for that, and am super grateful for you taking the time to share your opinion here.... More

I went during Savannah's semi annual Restaurant week to ASoul. The server was great and the meal was ok; I was a bit disappointed in the serving sizes (very small) and the flavor of the scallops were average. I will give Asoul another chance, just not during Restaurant week.

Although it sounds like the flavors of the food hit the mark, I apologize if the serving sizes weren't what you were expecting. Our menu is a bit different in terms of portions during Restaurant Week, but we're positive you'll enjoy what our regular menu has to offer. I'm looking forward to your next visit! Really, really excellent food. I had the little hilbo, which is not little at all and may well be the finest ribeye I have ever had. That was after the Oysters a la Soul, a delicious stuffed and baked oyster with bacon and crawfish. So good, even my non-oyster eating wife loved them. She had the chef's special Elk, with... More

The finest ribeye you've ever had? That's one compliment I don't take lightly -- I'm thrilled everything was worthy of five stars for you and your wife! Thank you so much for the kind words, and don't be a stranger next time you find yourself in Savannah! Best wishes, Maureen Craig, Owner More

Everything about this place is wonderful! We loved the location underground. The ambiance of this place is perfect for a romantic dinner. We ate here on a suggestion from our hotel, The Marshall House, and what a great suggestion it was. The staff was friendly and we were seated promptly at our reservation time. We love Farm to table restaurants... More

Thank you so much for this wonderful review, Norelle! Of course, I love that you enjoyed the flavors of your food so much -- those delicious, Southern flavors are what we're all about. What stands out to me as being especially cool, though, is how much you appreciated the service. I really look forward to sharing this with him --... More

A fairly good restaurant once you get past the well intentioned but too longwinded explanations of the offering by the enthusistic staff. I truly enjoyed the shrimp and grits but found the farmed NZ venison could have done with a slightly more inventive preparation. Deserts are very rich and better shared The setting in an off the pavement basement is... More

Although it's really great that the atmosphere and the shrimp and grits impressed you, David, I'm sorry if you weren't quite as pleased with the venison. As far as the service goes, we want each guest to have an adequate understanding of the menu before they order their food. Still, I apologize if the length of the explanations weren't quite... More

The restaurant is below street level and it seems like it's a secret place. It shouldn't be kept secret - it's amazing!! It's a little dark, with a really cool bar and chandeliers and stone walls. We started with white Sangria and I had the martini flight - how perfect. It was 3 martinis; peach, pomegranate and ginger. Really good... More

From the "shared" heirloom tomato salad to the pork belly, it sounds like the flavors of the food really hit the mark for you -- I'm beyond happy to be hearing that. The ambience and service is incredible, especially the bartenders. Let me just say, don't leave Savannah without eating here. The scallop dish that I ordered was delicious!!!!!!

I love that you enjoyed your scallops so much! I'll be sure to let the bartenders know that they left such a good impression on you -- I know they will be happy to hear that. Thanks for your recommendation, by the way. It truly means so much to us! Sincerely, Maureen Craig, Owner More

Delicious meal! I loved that I could get a small serving, 1 cup, of shrimp with grits in addition to my appetizer. I had never tried grits and wanted a taste. Our server was very professional and friendly. My husband and I both enjoyed our dinner, atmosphere was appealing and quiet.

I'm so happy to hear that you and your husband enjoyed the flavors of our food in addition to the atmosphere! It's pretty cool that you tried grits for the first time here with us -- the kitchen will definitely love to know that, too. Hope we'll see you for another meal down the road!
