We did a day trip to Savannah from Charleston and planned our day around our 11 a.m. meal at Mrs. Wilkes. Even President Obama dined there! We got in line early and discovered the home is on one of the most picturesque streets in the area, with beautiful wrought iron railings and charming flowerboxes. It wasn't necessary to get there... I went to Mrs. Wilkes when I was a kid, and brought my daughter back 35 years later-- waited 1.25 hours on a Friday, it was awesome and worth the wait. We then had a walking tour so we walked it off (well, maybe a little). It was fantastic!

This was my second visit to Mrs. Wilkes' and my impression remains the same... Why on earth do throngs of people continue to wait in line outside this establishment for an extended period of time for this experience and then RAVE about the food??? People, if this is Southern home cookin', then your mama heated up food from a can!... More

Because Mrs. Wilke's is only open Monday through Friday from 11am-2pm, we barely made it into the restaurant on our way out of Savannah at 1:30 on a Monday. We had to wait in a line, but it was in a beautiful part of the city and well worth the wait. Once inside, you are seated at a table for... More

Okay so maybe it is a tourist trap. Okay so maybe you have to sit with strangers. I am a foodie and I will tell you this is good old fashioned comfort food. The mac and cheese, the stuffing, the black eyed peas and fried chicken are all amazing. The beets are the best you have ever had. Go ahead... More

On a recent day trip to Savannah, we opted for lunch in the Historic District. The two "go to" tourist choices are: Paula Deen's Lady and Sons or Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. Based on the online ratings and some local opinions, we chose Mrs. Wilkes. If you go, be advised that this place: 1) is only open for lunch -... More

I would never make a trip to Savannah again without coming here. Heck, even if I was even just in the state of Savannah, I would make a trip to go here. There are so many wonderful aspects of this place. I don't want to describe too much of it, because it was a surprise to us of how wonderful... More

Fried chicken to die for! Rutabaga, sweet potatoes, rice, gravy, beets, mac and cheese, ribs, cole-slaw, beef stew, creamed corn, biscuits, corn bread, sweet tea, cucumbers w/vinegar and seasoning, and more - and each one delicious. We were fortunate to share this family style mean with gracious folks. I love this place and it was well worth the wait.

We had wanted to eat here but our morning walking tour took a little longer than expected. We knew it closed at 2pm. It was about 1:40pm and we were on our way to another restaurant when we happened to walk by. The line wasn't very long and we found out that if you were in line by 2pm, you... More

We were there on a previous trip, back in Sept. (sorry the the late review) there is usually a line, and you are seated at at a table with whomever is in line with you as you walk in. The food is wonderful, with memorable chicken, great atmosphere and fellow table guests that were fun. It's interesting to meet others... More
