This is one of the best restaurants in Bmore. It gets very little press but it is always packed and the lamb is to die for. Some of the apps are the most unusual and best I have ever had.

Very good Afghan food served in a nice setting by a very courteous (Afghani tradition) staff. Afghani restaurants and cuisine are hard to find in the U.S. A more subtle but even more complexly flavorful cuisine than Indian. The Helmand does a very good job. I give it four stars rather than five only because its decor, although quite nice,... More

It is a real treat to find such an upscale restaurant serving Afghan inspired cuisine. Plan in advance, because this is a very popular venue. If you are not familiar with this cuisine, ask your server for guidance...they are very helpful! I particularly like the lamb dishes. There are also many wonderful vegetarian options. A very good value as well!

I have to say this is perhaps my favorite restaurant in the world. Great food with good service and a laid back vibe. Every time I return to Baltimore this is my one "must eat" restaurant. The kaddo borawani is plate-licking good. I recommend the vegetarian aushak even though I'm not a vegetarian. My favorite dish is the chopendez. If... More

Don't waste your time coming to Baltimore for Afghan food. Claiming to have authentic food it is a complete joke. The food is over cooked and over seasoned. Completely surprising because the owners are from Afghanistan. True three different meals (Koufta Challow, Mantwo and Mourgh Challow). All three were over cooked. Sorry but it is worth passing on this one

Walked in on a spur of the moment, not expecting to find such a wonderful place, restaurant is full of life with it's many groups of well dressed individuals conversing over dinner. The waiter, Sadiq, walked us through the menu and was very friendly. Food was fantastic, great mix of vegetarian dishes and lamb meals, I would recommend this to... More

The Helmand came highly recommended and exceeded expectations. The service is almost too fast and furious, but the Afghan food is superb in quality and presentation. The descriptions that appear in the extensive menu are very helpful, although a glossary of unfamiliar terms (for the uninitiated) would be helpful. The setting is comfortable and relaxed. We would definitely return on... More

Walking along the well preserved 19th century streets of the Mount Vernon neighborhood, you wouldn't expect to find a well-heeled Afghani restaurant - especially if you didn't know that the Helmand is name of Afghanistan's largest province and it's longest river. I missed the establishment the first time I walked by. Thank goodness I found it. The food was well... More

I've had the pleasure of dining at The Helmand many times over the years, and it never fails to disappoint. A truly integral part of the Mt. Vernon neighborhood in Baltimore, this is one of the finest Afghan restaurants I've sampled. From the menu to the service, The Helmand never fails to disappoint for a truly authentic experience. I'm no expert on Afghan food but this was really very good. Had the stewed eggplant and pumpkin for starters and then everyone had a lamb dish of some sort. Everything was excellent. Server was very attentive though entrees were somewhat slow to come out but they were almost full the Saturday night we went. Had Afghan pudding and fruit... More
