Penn Cove Mussels at Their Best

Next time I eat Penn Cove messes in the Seattle area, I'll remember the ones I had at Toby's. Incredible! It appears this is where the locals eat, and hang on a rainy night. The service is good and friendly. The beer is cold. Salad look about average, but huge.

An eclectic decorative setting, a view of the harbor, cold beers on tap, properly prepared bar food, and entertaining staff who are attentive to their "regulars" and new-comers alike. What could be more fun?! I've been there a couple of times (once for the mussels, and once for the fish and chips) and each was an enjoyable experience. Don't miss... More

Disgusting mussels. We had delicious mussels the previous night at Christopher's Restaurant up the street but these mussels were truly awful. We barely finished our lunch. At least a quarter of our mussels were empty shells with no meat. At $25 for 2 #'s it was little pricey as well. The waitress stood around a lot and refused to take... More

Toby's has that old-timers' tavern look and feel. Bar with stools, booths along the perimeters, and an old pool table in the middle. We stopped for a cold beer in the afternoon. We can't review the food because we didn't have any. The waitress was neither friendly nor unfriendly. They feature Toby's Parrot Red Ale which we tried and it... More

I couldn't say it was one of the best meals I've had in a restaurant but it was definitely the best mussel chowder I've had anywhere. I've had clam and oyster chowder but his was with mussels and obviously the fresh, just plucked from the water mussels had a lot to do with it, it was tasty and perfect in... More

Going to Toby's is about more than dining. It is an Experience. The food is quite good, though the menu is limited essentially to bar food. They don't have the largest selection in draft beers and they are certainly not one of the blossoming number of high end Washington wine bars. The place is fairly small and usually crowded. There... Great place for a beer and hamburger with a view out onto Penn Cove and the Coupeville Dock. Great place to meet locals.

We stopped by Toby's on a whim we did not know what to expect but the Tavern looked like the only lively spot in town on a Thursday afternoon. We were not disappointed. We split a Rubeun sandwich with a side salad. Which we thoroughly enjoyed. The meat was lean, bread was grilled to perfection and there was no extra... More

This was my second visit. Love the tavern gaiety and fabulous waterfront setting. First visit we were chastized for sitting at an open table when no signage, waitstaff or host instructed us to do otherwise. They seemed crazy busy, but a simple greeting and direction goes a long way! Second visit we asked what the $19. FRESH Coho Salmon dinner... More

We've ate there before and my wife enjoyed the mussels. We tried to go back once and were rudely greeted at the door and quickly pushed out because we had our son (he was maybe 10 months old). One of the ladies said "It says it right on the door. No babies" in a condescending voice. Now I understand that... More
