The building at 50 Commerce pulses with history. Depression-era revelers snuck in it when it was a speakeasy. As the Blue Mill Tavern, it saw 50 years of change. And as Grange Hall, it captured the heart of Greenwich Village as a beloved gathering place. Now, as Commerce, a restaurant serving fine food prepared by chef Harold Moore, the building welcomes a slew of modern visitors seeking a warm place to share a meal and a sense of community. Owned by reputable restauranteur Tony Zazula and noted Chef Harold Moore, Commerce is homage to old New York, celebrating a city where history and contemporary sensibilities collide on every corner.

Place for the beautiful people

But they still let me in. Snooty front desk made us suffer because we were 10 minutes late for our reservation, but it was fun to people watch at the bar. Servers were very attentive, atmosphere was very fun. When we were finally seated, the service was quite good, and so was the food.

We went to Commerce with my brother on a recent visit to New York. They are locals and Commerce is one of their go to restaurants. I have to say that I can see why; the food was great, the service attentive, and it's a fun local restaurant. It was clear they were frequent customers; the staff remembered them and... More

the neighborhood is quaint, you walk into a friendly and warm atmosphere, with a nice bar and good sized drinks. The dining area is loud, but not overly so, and the food is absolutely great. Try the steak Oscar, cooked to perfection prime beef. Also the short rib raviolis were delectable. Wait staff professional and helpful.

Took family and friends for a celebratory dinner. It was the perfect choice. We were warmly greeted and given a choice of tables. We opted for a round as there were 6 of us and we wanted to be able to converse. Unfortunate for us it seemed small after drinks and food arrived. We chose a wine that was wonderful... More

So glad my wife and I found this place on leisurely stroll through the village. It caught my eye as we walked by because it was packed---Strange, since I must have walked past the place 100 times over the years. We were very happy that we stopped in. There was a bit of a wait, and we were lucky enough... More

As noted in several reviews the decor is pretty cool- a set of murals, nice sconces, comfortable banquettes. I've been there several times over the years and it remains a charming spot in a charming neighborhood. Now onto the food. We shared an avocado appetizer. Thought it was ok.I had the french toast. Highly recommend it. Flavors were great. My... More

I received a gift certificate to Commerce in New York City. And I must admit, that based upon some of the reviews, I was reluctant to use it on a special occasion, such as my wife's birthday. I am glad that we went. Location The restaurant is located in the West Village, north of Houston, south of 14th street and... More

Yes, you need a reservation to eat here. Yes, you may have to wait even if you have a reservation. Yes, it's a hair on the pricer side. But, in my experience it was worth it. My girlfriend and I shared the oysters, and the whole chicken, which was absolutely wonderful. And, oh, the bread basket! Yum! The restaurant is... More

So this was a dinner stop on the #50LooksGood tour and it was awesome! Met fun people while we waited-you must talk to people around you as it is quite packed. Wait staff was patient and very good....we drank the large format wine bottles so I think we might as been annoying as frat bros....Dinner was awesome. I had the... More

These folks think they are God's gift to cuisine. Food average. Atmosphere nice. Cost VERY expensive. Attitude: so out of control they all needed to be slapped! Especially the front door staff. How dare you (lowly being) come to OUR restaurant & expect to be treated like the royalty we ALL are?

Staying in West Village

Neighborhood Profile
West Village
Stretching from Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River, the West Village is one of the city’s most coveted addresses. Full of trendy shops, historic taverns, and cozy restaurants set amid 19th century architecture, this neighborhood has a unique old-world feel. You won’t find a more picturesque location in Manhattan. Without the traditional city grid layout, it’s easy to get lost here, but that’s part of the fun as you stroll down elegant narrow streets with beautiful brownstones. When you need a break, you can always stop in at one of the many quaint eateries or cafes to soak in the atmosphere, or head to the western edge of the neighborhood to enjoy magnificent waterfront views while taking a leisurely walk in Hudson River Park.
