best coffee in new york city

ok, so it's not the cheapest in town, but i travel to chelsea market from the upper west side most mornings to get my caffeine fix for the day. the simply described "coffee with milk" is exactly as a flat white (as we call it in australia) should be: rich, no foam, all the crema. perfect.

If you like a nice smooth coffee, you must try this place - the coffee is absolutely fabulous! I have tried the one near Grand Central and it is a delight. Never too busy and queues move quickly!

Founded I think around 2001 this just continues to set the standard in artisanal coffee. I like the alphabet city espresso blend, and expertly pulled shot mixed with creamy textured milk to make the perfect cappuccino. Service excellent. Was offered water with my coffee, really good value and the best way to start your day.

I went to the Ninth Street Espresso located next door to the Lombardy Hotel on E. 56th Street. The cappuccino was delicious. Enjoyed it every day. But the pastries leave something to be desired. Almond croissant is very "bready" -- not light and flaky as a croissant should be. The sticky bun was ok. None of the pastries were as... More

Great time at Chelsea Market location. Excellent espresso. Friendly service and knowledgeable staff. Worth coming back. You never who you are going to run into at this location. My wife met Rachel Ray.

Great Melbourne style coffee. We had coffee at three of these places, 2 in the East Village and one at Chelsea Market and it was consistently good. Not much food-wise but proper coffee.

After browsing through the internet in finding out the best coffee shop in NY, it came down to this coffee shop. It was located in the busy location in NY, not far from the main streets. It was rather hard to find since the shop was tiny and very quiet. I overlooked it and missed it once before finding it.... More

Went there recommended by a resident in the neighborhood and I was not disappointed! They have pastries to go with your drink, but really the focus is the coffee... Highly recommended!

Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
