great meal, a bit pricey

had a great sushi dinner here. Excellent choices, great sake. Service was very nice. Really enjoyed it. It is a bit expensive, but this is much better than most sushi places.

Don't miss the fried oysters. Service was outstanding, especially considering how we kept on ordering. It is small and the décor is not anything to write about, but, it is worth it for the great sushi.

Everytime I went to Kanoyama I enjoyed good service and food. A bit expensive but we always had a good time There, and there is always solething new to try.

We went last night and were pleasantly surprised. The storefront was not too impressive. We sat down and were pleasantly surprised. Very friendly and accomodating staff, polite and eager to please. The sushi was very fresh and we tried many of the appetizers. Great ambiance. No need for a reservation if you get there before 7pm. Popular place....very busy for... More

Kanoyama has high quality sushi for prices that won't break the bank. I'm not saying it's cheap, but the value-for money is very high. I opted for the Omakase (Chef's choice) and I got a beautiful collection of some of the best raw fish I've had outside of Japan (see picture). Also tried the gyozas and they were excellent: moist... Visited here first time this week and LOVED it! We ordered an omakase, which came with four app's, and 8 pcs of sushi. Enjoyed evrything. Most of the fish, if not all, is flown from Japan, and they are all quality fish. I had a previledge of speakjng with owner chef Nobu for a while, and he's the sweetest guy:)... More

I came with a date, we enjoyed sake, some dumplings & sushi for two. Service was good & sushi chefs were on point. The fish used was great quality but I was disappointed to see crab stick used in the Cali. Thank you!

My wife and I have eaten in most Sushi spots in the city and Kanoyama is by far one of our favorites! If you can, get a seat at the sushi bar. The tuna ribs are an amazing dish and the uni oyster ikura is not to be missed. The fish is super fresh and the staff couldn't have been... More

The restaurant looks like your average Japanese you find many of here in New York, and most of these restaurants do not disappoint. But this restaurant does a lot more, the sashimi and sushi rice are unbelievable, unexpected for the place it seems. It has a great atmosphere and the variety of the food is great. And for the food... More

Ate at bar, sushi was very good, spider roll exceptional, salmon terrific, california roll was super pedestrian. Service professional. Nice Jazz, though decor was pretty unexceptional. Overall, decent meal, if you want good sushi in East Village will deliver...but didn't feel like I would go out of my way to go back there.

Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
