We had an early dinner at Basso56 prior to a concert at the Philharmonic. When we first called they were full but called us back when someone failed to confirm. Near Broadway, a nice meal before the theater. We had the grilled calamari & artichoke, arugula parmesan salad and we would definitely order both again. The branzino fish was delicious. The gnocchi were horrible, not fresh and possibly microwaved. Service was very good.

Well, a tricky crowd of in-laws and kids, and a show to get to closeby... (fiddler!) so we selected what we thought to be a well reviewed mid range Italian. All that and more. Great food, but the point of difference was the warmth, a nice feeling from all the staff. We were pleased - I had salad and an... More

Four girls visited Basso for a birthday dinner a few weekends ago and while a nice experience, I wouldn't quite give it a 5. Our waitress had a very strong eastern european accent and was hard to understand in the very noisy restaurant. Appetizers were fine and thankfully she let us know that the salads were very large, so we... More

Quality food, attentive service, good wine list. See their web site for lunch & dinner menus. There are daily specials. I think the crab cake appetizer is enough for dinner. Portions are generous. Have to go down a staircase to enter the restaurant so not good for people who have physical difficulties. Make reservations as the place is very popular.... More

Small place that is frequented by many tourists while in NY. The food was OK and in line price wise with NY restaurants. Casual place with a bar, I held a small meeting there and it was quiet enough to have conversation. The service was very good but the sauce was too sugary for my taste. Try Patsy's next store... After a wonderful docent led tour at Moma, our Picasso explorers headed to Basso56. We were warmly greeted by our waiter and served hot tea or coffee immediately (for those who wanted) as a warm-up after a long cold walk. Charming! There is a wonderful two or three course luncheon menu (with tips and tax either $25 or $30 complete... More

We eat here once a year when visiting NYC. So many restaurants have great food, but you have to put up with the noise and precious decor. Not here. It's calm, elegant without any stuffiness, the staff is both formal and relaxed, and the food is excellent.

Setting was cozy. The food was delicious. I order the veal scaloppine and it's worth trying--meet was thin and tender and the sauce in which it was cooked was tasty.

Found this place and had tickets to an 8pm Broadway show - no problem making the curtain. The food was excellent, lots to pick from on the menu and the service was great. I would definitely recommend this place.

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
