Very nice and helpful servers, pleasant below street level dining room, and excellent fairly standard Italian food.

Had dinner at Basso 56 last night before a show. Decent decor, though the tables were a bit tightly packed together. Our party of 3 started with the mussels appetizer, the artichokes and zuchini, and the beet salad. The mussels were fresh and perfectly prepared with a nice, delicate red sauce. The artichokes and zucchini were lightly breaded and fried,... More

My wife and I found this place when the restaurant we had planned on for a late dinner turned out to be closed. Lucky us. Great service, great food, great value at Basso56. Out home-made pasta dishes were tasty and well-prepared, as was the caprese salad that we shared. Great wine for $55. And this is the only place outside... More

Basso 56 offers a warm, hospitable, not pretentious environment with a good, fairly-priced Italian and US wine list, and the typical ristorante menu, including an acceptable Pasta Bolognese (my litmus test). I sat at the small (maybe 5 seats) bar which is tight to the front door and reception station...a little challenging. If there were a 3.5, I would give... More

If your staying in midtown and don't feel like traveling to little Italy, it is GREAT! The restaurant is small and the dessert menu could be better, but overall - GREAT PASTA!

booked this table based on trip advisor ratings through open table. We arrived and were seated by a pleasant Russian lady. She was attentive and helpful in our selections and when we sent back one steak she was very kind and checked on us again to make sure all was ok. Nice location very central,. Like most Italians it was... More

We were in NY for a few days for a birthday treat. After reading the reviews, chose Basso56 for one of our dinners. We had booked and when we arrived, it was very busy (8.30pm). The lady at the bar was very friendly which was a good start to our night. Unfortunately for us, we were given a table very... More

We selected Basso56 partly based on other Trip Advisor reviews as well as its location since we had theatre tickets after dinner. Our reservation however was 3 hours before the show. We arrived to an almost empty restaurant. No problem. We hoped for a reasonably leisurely meal. Our waitress obliged. The chef probably did not. Our appetizer arrived very quickly... More

For an excellent meal with prompt and efficient service at reasonable prices (at least for NYC) look no further than this restaurant. Seating is tight but the restaurant has a nice vibe with really good food and great service. A couple had 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 1 bottle of wine, 2 desserts and 2 after dinner drinks for less than... More

Decided to have dinner there with my parents before flying home, and found a new favorite in NYC. Very kind staff. Amazing food: fresh breads, tomato bruschetta, Caprese salad, and pasta made with love. I would recommend the Rigatone a la bolognese. Lovely experience!!
