We dined here on a Saturday night, 6 of us, so we were able to taste a variety of dishes. First off, the restaurant was overly warm. For appetizers we tasted the ceasar salad, which was watery. The calamari were overcooked and rubbery. My mussels came in an uninspired tomato broth which hadn't made any acquaintance with the mussels. And,... More

My family have been enjoying Basso 56 since years ago at their original location on the Lower Eastside. Paolo is simply one of the best Italian Chefs in the world and Alex is by far the best Host in NYC. Everything on the menu is outstanding and the Italian Wine List is stellar and full of values. Every business associate... More

Not a fancy reastaurant of a place for extremely refined palates. But the food was excellent, real italian taste and menu. Great service, price reasonable for the quality of the food. I would recommend the pastas (bucatini all'amatriciana, paccheri, spaghetti con polpette). Pasta is all'uovo and cooked perfectly. I recommend this place.

It's not your super expensive super fancy restaurant snooty restaurant. It's just your NYC midtown moderately priced go to place. Modern nice ambiance, super friendly and on-spot service, and beautifully presented tasty Italian dishes. Tonight the three of us had a striped bass, a baccala (cod), and paccheri pasta with eggplant and ricotta. Every dish delicious and presented perfectly. Great... More

I use Trip Advisor religiously & it's because TA users rarely steer me wrong -- & such was the case with Basso56. I searched & searched for a great Italian spot we could go to post-theater & thought I'd give this #35 gem a try. It was an easy 15 minute walk from Minskoff Theater & tucked on a quiet... More

Any restaurant that serves wines made by Silvio Jermann is a place where you can expect wines of very good quality and food to match. We were not disappointed. I used Tripadvisor to find this place and we enjoyed our dinner before attending Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks jazz orchestra playing two blocks away. My wife enjoyed it so much... More

Very enjoyable, reasonably priced dining experience in NYC! Easy to find, minimal ambiance, but clean, modern setting w/ attentive not intrusive service. Husband loved his pasta Bolognese which was more than ample even for his appetite. I opted for 2 appetizers: crispy zucchini and artichokes over dressed greens and a single large, very yummy crab cake. We each had a... More

We picked this for dinner on the first evening of our trip and based on the reviews on TripAdvisor. From the menu choices to the presentation of the beautiful I really could not fault this restaurant. Very friendly and attentive staff. Will return on our next trip.

Very good food, excellent service, good wine list, reasonable prices by Manhattan standards. Very convenient to Broadway theaters.

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
