Oh Wow!

Brilliant. I love that this restaurant sits just below street level. I love that when I walked in there were a lot of Italians (a great sign in an Italian restaurant). The food was amazing and there was a great Italian wine selection. It was a little loud and the tables are seated quite close... read more

From the food to service, we had an excellent dinner prior to our show. Start to finish the food was delicious and the wine list was perfect.

This is a basement restaurant, but don't let this put you off! The excellent service was matched by the excellent quality of Italian food on offer from a wide range. The restaurant was comfortable and the staff very friendly. This is one that i would definitely re-visit!

We went with friends for dinner. The room was nice and the service good. We had a nice Polish waitress that explained very well the specials of the day. I ordered Crab cake as Appetizer, which was ok and Bucatini all'Amatriciana, as Main. They were a bit too cooked, so not "al dente". Wine (Primitivo) was very good and not... More

We made a reservation for this restaurant for our fist visit. They took us after about 5 minutes which was no problem. There isn't much of a bar or waiting area so it was tough to wait inside. The bar is really small and it's right at the front door. The food was incredible as was the service. I had... More

We went to celebrate a birthday. First course -calamari griglia- OK, but ordinary. The Main course - Spaghetti Frutti di Mare e Rucola - a disaster with the most horrible and tasteless tomatosauce we ever have tasted and the shrimps was missing As it was a celebration it was not a time to complain - but what a disappointment

Selecting an Italian restaurant in NY can be very difficult as there are many to select. Basso56 was a wise selection for a nice Italian meal. Make sure you request reservations as it is very busy. The staff does not "rush" your dining experience. The "setting" of the restaurant is not spectacular. The restaurant is "long and narrow". The bar... More

It's fine. Not bad by any means, but nothing we had was anything special. We both had pasta - the spaghetti & meatballs was the special. The crab cake was average at best. The bread was (that's it - just "was"). The ambiance is ok - and a *little* more room than many NY places.

My sister & husband are regular patrons @ Basso56, & Disided to take my wife & I out for dinner to their favorite plqce. If you're hungry & want delicious large portions, This is the place to go. They also have a humugous wine list. As for prices, I'm not familiar with them. Sis & hubby took care of the... More

Basso56 was close to our hotel and we decided to try it. We had an exquisite dinner and the service was fantastic. I highly recommend it. Does not look special from the outside but it is.

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
