Excellent sushi in the UWS

Having just been to Sushi Nakazawa a week ago, it's hard to compare any sushi. But Gari is still great, my last visit being about 8 years ago. The quality is above par. Their omakase starts at $100 for 12 prices, which actually seems a more expensive than Nakazawa. We didn't do the omakase. Instead... read more

A hot Upper West Side sushi restaurant at which we had an okay meal. The eel sushi was very good as was the maguro and avocado (which was made by the wasabi/soy-based sauce). While the shrimp tempura was okay, we were disappointed by the steamed crab dumpling and the gyoza dumplings, both of which had more filler than they had... More

We're disappointed you weren't blown away by your meal with us. Although we're glad you like you enjoyed the eel and maguro sushi, it sounds like the appetizers weren't your favorite -- we're sorry to hear that. Your feedback is appreciated though, and we'll look into adding some more things to beef up the sake list a bit. Hope you'll... More

The Japanese fusion food is superb. We had the Amakashi selection. Just know that each piece runs $20/each. They bring the platters until you ask them to stop. It isn't cheap, but the food is beyond most Japanese restaurants. This Gari location is a little quieter than others, as there is some space between tables. The air conditioning does blow... More

It sounds like you had a nice dinner with us, and that's wonderful to hear! Although you didn't opt for the omakase, you appear to be quite the sushi pro, anyway! We're glad you enjoyed the sushi plate and salad -- sorry the dumplings didn't knock your socks off, though! Next time we'd love you to try some other dishes... More

It is always a pleasure to revisit a restaurant and find it as satisfying as before. We always order the omakase and again found it special. Twelve pieces are brought four at a time. The fish and rice part are always first class. What makes each piece so special is its added ingredients. Service is prompt and friendly. It's not... More

The pleasure's all ours, John! It's great to hear you're a big fan of the omakase -- thanks for the thorough breakdown of how the whole process works. We'd love to have you back soon, even if you go for something else on the menu! Take care, Gari of Columbus Team More

Gari is always a winner! We headed to the UWS outpost because the one on the UES couldn't seat us until 10 pm. We were not disappointed. The hubby and I order Gari on a regular basis (the UES branch delivers) so we went for the sushi and sashimi omakase. Below is a sampling of what we had: Sockeye Tuna... More

We think you're a winner too, Jaimee! It's great to hear we could accommodate you -- sorry we got filled up with reservations so fast! It sounds like you order quite a bit from us, so it's no surprise you made the right choice of getting omakase! We're pleased the service was equally as top notch as all the food... More

This restaurant, which is my favorite sushi place in New York, is not a typical Japanese sushi bar. The chef proposes original sushi recipes, many of them with seared or flamed fish, seasoned with (non traditional) spices and vegetable additions. The fish is high quality and it is combined with a wide variety of ingredients : quail egg, dried seaweed,... More

Your favorite sushi place in New York? We're humbled by your kind words and support. It's great to hear you adore the omakase and order it frequently -- that's our recommendation, too. We're also happy that you find the atmosphere and our team just as delightful as the sushi you've tried -- it sounds like you've got an original and... More

We had a business meal with 6 of us. Two enjoy and eat sushi, we trusted them to order sushi sashimi. They kept bringing it out, until we said no more. Forgive me for not remembering what we all ate, but it is a good introduction. We all enjoyed our meals. And we ended with mochi ice cream, so how... More

"Accidentally" discovered this place as a substitute for the shake shack nearby. King salmon and sushi was great! Good size lunch. Fantastic service. 4$$$$ is also true.

Lunch at Gari has been one of the most expensive meals I have ever head, but sitting at the bar and having the head chef make dish after dish specifically for you cannot be beat. Never had better sushi. Well worth the cost.

Most recent of many trips to Gari on the Columbus. The quality of the fish and presentation is unmatched. Loses a star for pushy waitstaff, always trying to upsell. Count on $100/person minimum, substantially more if you drink sake.
