Great Noisy Neighborhood Cafe!

This cozy cafe has become increasingly expensive over the years, and also, alas, increasingly more corporate. This used to be a place where managers and servers knew your name and you were welcomed with a smile. No more. Down to business with good food and getting you out as quickly as possible... read more

So, we were only in Manhattan for a couple of days and had already eaten at an American diner near our hotel in Hells Kitchen and wanted to find another elsewhere. We took the subway up to Upper West Side as we wanted to pop into Zabar's. We were so pleased to stumble across French Roast! We eat in a... More

Whenever I go for lunch in any French style bistro, I try their Salad Nicoise. The salad here was not great. In fact disappointing. Why? The tuna came from a can. Probably Chicken of the Sea....and the potatoes were on the aged side..in other words, there was an acidic off taste that was almost a pickled flavor, but if you... More

Went in for a quick lunch and wasn't disappointed. We had the quiche (a special) and the frittata. Good quality food and service.

My wife & I arrived without a booking on Dec 22nd. We were seated & greeted without delay but we were a little disappointed with the delay in taking our order. It also took an inordinate time to get our order. The waitress who took our order & the waiter who delivered our order were pleasant & helpful. The salmon... More

Mrs. M turned 60 on Thanksgiving day and since she has always been a big fan of the Macy's Day parade we booked a hotel room, took the train from South Jersey and played it by ear. Well we got to see the parade, which was great, and then saw the new Rocky movie, which was also great. But it... More

People love French Roast. It has a cache, I suppose. But it is so average that I hadn't gone there in many years so decided to try it again. It was exactly the same. The waiters were extraordinarily friendly and helpful though it took a lot of work to get their attention and 20 minutes to get our drinks. But... More

We went for brunch and sat outside. The service was good and friendly and the brunch menu looked pretty good. They were not offering the normal lunch menu. I ordered the Salad Nicoise. It came out and looked pretty good until I started picking around and found more brown, old lettuce than fresh. It was not a good salad to... More

My husband and I both studied in France, so we love classic French bistros, and this restaurant nailed it. We came here with the kids for a Sunday brunch when we were in town. It would have been a fabulous experience except that we had the worst waiter in the place. People sat down after us who got their food,... More

Some of the menu choices were not available and portions were very small! Service was sweet but inefficient.
