French Food Done Well

This was an impromptu visit after a day of sightseeing, but was an excellent find. We had a main meal each and shared a dessert. The sauteed calves liver was very well cooked. I had my favorite winter meal Cassoulet which was very tasty. In this version, chicken was substiuted for the more usual... read more

Someone once said that if you were a French chef who needed to go back to your roots, you would go here. A small lovely restaurant off the beaten path but easy to find. All the menu is good. Do try...

French / Provencal traditional dishes in an old-timey informal atmosphere. We love it and go often. Excellent onion soup, fish soup, creme caramel and Provencal dishes. Reasonable prices (for a French restaurant in Manhattan's West Village). Service can be slow, just as in France, but all the better to savor an excellent mid-priced French dinner.

There are good restaurant owners and there are terrible ones. The owner of this restaurant is a terrible one. I purchased a Gorupon which expired on 12/22/15. A week ago I called and left a message. No response. Called again and spoke to a Frenchman who I assumed was the owner and explained to him that I would like him... More

Chez J is located at the Houston St. end of a MacDougal strip of small restaurants that cater to the large academic population from nearby New York University. If you know campuses, you'll recognize the neighborhood. CJ looks to be a place that has been feeding students and faculty for a long time. I'm sure it has a very loyal... More

The room is small and pleasant, but the service was very slow, especially considering the dining room was only 1/3 full. Gravlax and brandade were okay, not great. Special whole dorade fish was simply done and lovely. The accompanying julienned veggies were nicely seasoned, but suffered from being overly soggy.

My husband and I happened to stumble onto this trez treasure as we ambled along looking for a place to have our last meal in NYC. Our waiter was either French or learning the dialect/accent for - what I hope to be - a promising career. We were seated promptly, wine arrived within minutes and the food was quick to... More

We had an enjoyable evening and a groupon (available on the web; just google it) made the meal relatively inexpensive. We went on a Sunday evening. The restaurant wasn't crowded. The service was friendly and competent, if somewhat harum scarum. Be prepared to wait for service since two waiters are not quite enough for even a half-empty room. The food... More

Great Provencal french restaurant. We were all hungry and had a lot of food. Lamb merguez sausage was great. Moules (of course) delicious. Grilled baby calamari was tender and tasty. Caramelized onion tart was good. Branzino (on special) was delicious. Cassoulet was hearty grub on a chilly night. Steak frites was terrific. Finally the braised pork shoulder was awesome. Put... Staying in Greenwich Village

Neighborhood Profile
Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighborhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighborhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.
