Good German food in Manhattan

We visited the Heidelberg on a recent visit to NYC. Located on the upper East side, it is a typical German restaurant- good beers, lots of various wursts, schnitzel dishes, etc.- everything you would expect in German food. The quality and quantity were quite good. Our adults kids split one of... read more

I had the Schnitzel a la Holstein, which is a breaded veal cutlet that is garnished with a fried egg, anchovies, and capers, served with home fries and red cabbage. I found it all to be very flavorful and delicious. I asked that the egg be served sunny side up, which I think enhanced my enjoyment of the dish as... More

This place has good food, great décor, good ambiance. Very nice place to come and have a good German meal. The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable. The potato pancakes are phenomenal. One small caveat: don't let the scaffolding outside turn you away.

Stopped in on a recent trip to NYC. What a great place. Food was superb and German beer on draft was outstanding. Great meal, glad I went there. Staff was friendly and courteous.

Always looking for different places to dine in the big city a friend had recommended it. The food was to die for. Since I am of German descent it was like my grandmothers cooking. A wide variety of German dishes along with some American dishes with a German flare. A wide variety of German beers to enjoy also. I highly... More

The last stand of what was Germantown in NYC. Try the pork shank or one of the various wurst platters (better with a group) great beer and wine, save room for desert!!

I am German and I can tell you that the food is legit at Heidelberg! Everything they served us tasted so good and I felt like I went back home! I hope everyone else enjoys it just like I did.

Went there for a dinner on Saturday night with my husband and didn't even need a reservation! Casual atmosphere, great service and delicious food! The sauerbraten was very good as was the garten salad and schweinbraten and wine I ordered. We are definitely planning on going back.

If you like sitting in a NYC 1930's atmosphere then you will love the Heidelberg. If you enjoy a german cruisine cooked and served to perfection you will like Heidelberg even more. Last, if you enjoy real German beer; light or dark, you will enjoy this old style NYC German Pub. Best German food I have found in New York.

I am of German-Russian descent and know my kraut, red cabbage, potato salad, and brats well, and this place did not disappoint. Three of us decided to enjoy Easter lunch here instead of at an overpriced, prix-fixe brunch elsewhere. Great decision! We ordered the Sausage Platter for Three, and it was a pork fest! Four kinds of sausage, ham, bacon,... More

Staying in Upper East Side

Neighborhood Profile
Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighborhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighborhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.
