Once again at the Heidelberg. German food restaurants even in NYC are few. Though it is not gourmet fare, we find the food here generally very tasty and generously offered. Lots of beer choices, of course. We dined on a Saturday evening and the crowd was somewhat boisterous but not annoying. If you want reasonably representative Gemutlichkeit in Manhattan, this... More

I would first like to say that I am from Germany but I am living in New York. Also, I would like to mention that my daughter (14) and I went to the Heidelberg to eat Schweinebraten (Pork Roast) and Kartoffelknödel (Potato Dumplings) for her (mainly because I failed miserably when I attempted to make dumplings last Sunday) and Leberknödelsuppe... I have been coming to this restaurant on the Upper East Side for about fifteen years and I look forward to each visit. The food is fabulous German cuisine (bring your appetite!) and if you love beer, you will think you died and went to Heaven. The service is friendly and helpful (and always adorable in their trachtenwear!) Lunch is... More

Have been waiting to eat here for a while, not really worth the wait! Hot day, air conditioning not on, waitress said they turned it on yet the place never got to a comfortable temperature. Not a good thing when you drinking beer and eating a full meal. Waitress was too busy to take our picture, said she would later... More

I am surprised by the other reviews. This place was very average in appearance, food and service. We ordered the pork, specialty of the house, and it was so fatty it was uneatable. The manager did come and he wanted to know if we wanted them to cut off the fat!!! When we adamantly said we did not want it... More

Herring was fresh and sauce was tasty. Potato pancakes were a little greasy but not bad. Pork shank was good. Goulash was not tender and very chewy. Jaeger Schnitzel was ok. The spatzle was ok nothing to write home about. Service was done by 3 or 4 different people and was ok. Beer was cold and good selection. All in... More

This was my first visit to Heidelberg. The food was very tasty and the selection included all the usual suspects plus several nice house specialties. Our group of four had trouble deciding between the options, but settled on a variety of sausages and sauerbraten. The potato dumplings were quite thick and heavy, but we otherwise enjoyed everything.

Menu very tempting for me, as I like Hungarian, Austrian food. Portions are large, but that is about all. My so called Goulash, had far too large pieces of meat, the spatzle, slightly burnt and a friends pork knuckle really gross. Cucumber salad and hering literally swimming in sauce.

Nice beer and food, even if some plates aren't German at all, some local creations like chicken paprika! Crowded friday evening but the staff was able to handle.

Heidelberg has been in business since the 30s when the area was predominantly German. It is one of the few German restaurants in NYC. The food is quite good, particularly the saurbraten, the goose and the schnitzel. The beer selection is impressive. Service is up and down - sometimes excellent, sometimes just acceptable. If you have a craving for German... More
