Le Colonial is a truly delightful culinary experience. Like stepping into French Colonial Southeast Asia, this two-story restaurant, designed by Greg Jordan, consists of a main dining room with louvered wall panels, colorful tile floors, and vintage photos of Vietnam. Upstairs is an elegant, but lively, lounge serving a full dinner or just appetizers and cocktails. The lounge serves as an ideal setting for private parties and business dinners. Chef Ron Hsu serves an authentic Vietnamese menu with an emphasis on fresh seafood, meats, and vegetables.

Terrific Duck as a Main Course

This is a pretty restaurant (see my photo) which attracts a classy crowd. I started off with the delicious Cha Gio which is four (only 3 are shown in my photo) Crispy Rolls of Pork, Shrimp, Crab, Lettuce, Fresh Herbs and Nuoc Cham Sauce on the side for dipping ($14). What a lovely setting for terrific service and delicious food. I had the scrumptious crab and eggplant appetizer, fresh and bright Vietnamese bouillabaisse. My aunt had a gorgeous scallop salad. Gracious hospitality and did I mention the impressive and tasty craft cocktails? Full house, but no need to scream at each other--a rarity in wonderful restaurants these days. Go there.

It's always a treat to come back to Le Colonial. Excellent menu. Well prepared & presented. Classy. The bar upstairs is a great place to meet for drinks and/or dinner. Both upstairs (bar) and downstairs are terrific for conversation. Friendly service. A litle overpriced.

We are so lucky to have such a loyal group of customers such as yourself and we wanted to take the time to thank you for your kind words. Without guests such as yourself, Le Colonial would not be standing 20+ years later. Best Regards, Docho Dochev General Manager More

First the good: The space is very nice, they have tried to make it into a very British colonial era decor that transports you to a different time. The bar upstairs is also very tastefully decorated, looks like a nice place for a pre-dinner drink. Now the not-so-bad: The food is actually ok, its as good as you can get... More

We wanted to thank you for dinning with us and taking the time to write your review. The classic French colonial era decor is something we pride ourselves on, along with our amazing food and excellent service. We’re glad you enjoyed the food but were shocked to see you thought our host was being classist. That couldn’t be further from... More

Although the food was good & somewhat pricey for the portions, I would have eaten there again if we were treated respectfully. Unfortunately we could not enjoy our dining experience because throughout our meal, we felt that the establishment wanted us to rush & leave. During our dinner, the busboy must have asked us at least 5 times whether he... More

Went there for a family dinner but also with some friends on another occasion. The food was excellent and the waiters helpful. The restaurant in itself is very welcoming. I have tried the one in San Francisco as well, the menus are different but the food is just as good. I would go again!

We can’t tell you how much we appreciate your kind words. You’ve outlined the key principals by which we work, excellent food and professional service. Now that you’ve visited Le Colonial in San Francisco and New York, all you have left is to visit Le Colonial and Chicago and you will have dined with the trifecta! Best Regards, Docho Dochev... People often forget the French connection in Vietnam. Very good and a unique mix of flavors. Stopped by on a busy Friday night and had a good meal.

The staff was friendly without being intrusive. I was alone and went a bit early. My dinner was excellent! It was as comfortable and good as I think is possible in this city.

The interior of this atmospheric restaurant is absolutely fantastic - very authentic Vietnamese colonial style, with languorous ceiling fans, metal ceiling and white linen. It really reminded us of restaurants we visited in Vietnam. However, the food is a major let down. We ordered the whole snapper and the five spice duck. Both were dry, bland and not a patch... More

Had lunch here with my family the other day while visiting New York. The place has a nice, inviting decor. The food is very good, specially the crispy rolls. The drinks were also very good. The service could had been a little friendlier, but adequate. This place is very expensive. Lunch with drinks for three adults and two kids, $450.... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
