Good Latin food on the Upper West Side

The Calle Ocho, although entered from the lobby of the Excelsior Hotel, doesn't have a "hotel restaurant" feel about it. The lights are low, the Latin music is fast and loud, and the food is very good. Two problems we had may sound trivial, but to us they weren't. Some of the tables are dark... read more

Ok so I have to admit that I like coming here for brunch. The food is awesome. They seat you quickly with a reservation, without one, you can be waiting for quite a long while. Depending on what day you go, during the week or on a weekend, it can go from an intimate setting to a club atmosphere real... More

This particular family luncheon took place after a religious ceremony. We took over the entire restaurant. At least 100 family members, from all over the country, talking, eating, reminiscing, catching up and loving each other. Our steaks were excellent, cooked as we like them, with Peruvian spices and delicious Yucca fries. We gobbled up everything. Staff was efficient, attentive, and... More

We loved the decor (lots of art), the friendly, efficient service but most of all the food which was exceptionally tasty, different and almost too plentiful. There were many things on the menu I would love to return to try. A really enjoyable experience.

I was staying at the Excelsior Hotel which is right next door so I ended up visiting the restaurant twice. I had the Avocado Salad on both occasions and for mains I had the Sea Bass and the Peruvian style Chicken All the dishes were beautifully presented and tasted superb. Unfortunately I was so full I was not able to... More

My friend ran the NYC marathon and we needed a place to fuel her up the day before. This came recommended to us by a local and we could have stayed all day! I love Cuban food, the variety of Sangria was lovely. Good deal all around. Close to the park.

Didnt eat here but had drinks. Array of beers from Peru, Argentina etc. Staff really good and not overly expensive. Could be open during the day though.

My friend told me about this restaurant, so I decide to give a try. I loved it. For appetizer we chose the "Picada" It is a combination of many appetizers. It is huge! After eating the Picada I was full. I chose the Bistec for entree. I was very well served. I would say only the "Picada" would be enough... More

Not sure if I should write first about the lovely team at this restaurant or the food. We happened upon Calle Ocho at the last minute during a one night romantic trip to NYC. We had five small plates and mojitoes and sangria. We love octopus and their grilled octopus was very, very good. Our favorite dish was the arepas.... More

The hotel foyer was so regal, I expected the dining experience to be the same. Overall, it was very disappointing. Though the service was rather great, the food was not up to par. The tuna ceviche was the only item we enjoyed. Thank God it was fresh! The octopus appetizer was inedible, it was NOT FRESH. Steak was asked to... More
