Good soul food

The restaurant was crowded as expected but we were still seated immediately. The food was good, I've actually had better at a soul food buffet in Harlem years ago, but this place is famous and soul food isn't as easy to come by as pizza. The atmosphere was nice, kind of small and reminiscent of... read more

We visited here on recommendation of a few people. The service was great..discovering we were from Australia the waitress gave us both a locally used vegetable that we hadn't of to try..for free. The food was extremely tasty...hope we get back there before we leave New York City.

Went here for soul food cause had heard great things about it. I had the fried chicken, mashed potato and collard greens and peach cobbler for dessert - my husband had the ribs, corn and mac & cheese. All really good - chicken was amazing - really crispy and crunchy and still moist. Service was abit slow but we were... More

I went to lunch, we traveled from North Carolina. It was dissapointing in some ways. The greens and macaroni and cheese were amazing! My ribs were just okay the world famous ribs were not that. The place needs renovations and the bathroom is scary it is down a stairway away from the tables. My fiance had the fried chicken and... More

Sorry to hear you were disappointed, Brandie, and that we didn't meet your expectations! Judging by your observations on the service, we think it's likely that you visited us on a busy or off day. In any case, we'd love to have you back sometime. If you ever make the drive back up to Harlem from North Carolina, feel free... More

This is a well known place to get authentic soul food. No reservationsarevtaken so it is annoying to wait with large crowds trying to get into this tiny spot. Service was good once you did get a seat. Cornbread was like mom made it and good. I didn't like the famous ribs. They were too tough for me but the... More

Sorry to hear the volume of people kind of turned you off, Mamie! We know it gets busy in here, but we always try to make the service as tailored and enjoyable as possible. That said, we know we're not always going to hit the mark. In any case, we'd love for you to come back and give us another... More

Perfect collard. Mashed potatoes, from scratch, black eyed peas and fried chicken and waffle. I came to New York after dieting for and competing in a bodybuilding show and the first place I want to go is Sylvia's. And boy I'm glad that I did. This is by far the best chicken and waffles ever at a restaurant. Go there.... More

Family vacation to New York. We stayed in Harlem, so we decided we had to visit Sylvia's. We were not disappointed! I did not like the sweet cornbread (not like Jiffy), but everything else was EXCELLENT! We had greens, sweet potatoes, fried catfish, fried chicken, ribs, pork chops and mac n cheese. Too full to eat dessert. Everything was fabulous!... More

We were on our way to The Cloisters and decided to stop at this Harlem favorite. The portions were generous -- my husband and I shared a combination plate and we were both well-fed. My son had fried chicken, collard greens and potato salad and his girlfriend had friend chicken, corn, and mashed potatoes. We had to be rolled back... More

It's been several years since I've been to Sylvia's, so I didn't know what to expect. Have no fear..it's as good as ever and the prices are still reasonable (for New York) This is a must for anyone touring Harlem! They also have vegetarian and seafood options. 😊
