We went early on a Saturday evening with our visiting friend from Chicago (it was her birthday!) and another mutual friend. Not a long wait to be seated and we chose to dine indoors (there is an outdoor area as well). The walls are decorated with pictures of Sylvia and her family as well as her with persons of fame.... The food was good and plentiful. The staff was very friendly and food was brought in a timely fashion and hot. Very attentive to us. Would recommend to anyone. Priced right.

We went in summer and ate out the front. That was really good and we had nice views, fresh air, etc. Inside looked pretty stuffy and out the back seemed to be a pretty poor option. The service I received during booking process was atrocious, bordering on rude. I had booked for 11 people and found it difficult to talk... More

I heard about this place on the travel channel, as one of the best spots for southern comfort food in New York. Boy was I disappointed. We went on a Sunday when you're forced to order off of the gospel Sunday menu which gets you an entree two sides, a drink and cornbread for the table (which will run you... More

My mom and I stopped into Sylvia's on a recent trip to NYC. I must say our waitress was extremely slow and lacked personality big time. She was nice enough, but just slow with no personality. I had the fried cat fish and grits- delicious!! My mom had the classic chix and waffles- she said it was really good. We... More

My husband, son and I decided to try Sylvia's after seeing the restaurant on one of the food networks. We had to wait a little bit and then were taken to a table in the back area. It took awhile for the waitress to come over and take our order. My husband had the chicken and waffles (which is the... More

Let me tell you, when they say "garlic mashed potatoes" they aren't kidding...every vampire within 200 miles of me died when I walked out of this place after eating lunch. The fried chicken and mashed potatoes was excellent. My wife and nephew had the chicken and waffles, they couldn't stop raving about it. And my son had smother chicken and... More

Like most family owned establishments that reached critical acclaim, once the founder passed away, they rest on their laurels and only strive for financial improvements. Sylvia's is no exception. Our most recent visit is nothing shy of disappointing. Corners were cut and it was very evident in our weeknight dinner. Let's start with our beverages. The lemonade and iced tea... More

Took 5 French friends and my 20 something y.o. son to Sylvia's recently. For those who haven't been, it is STILL a quintessential NYC soul food experience. The staff is most cordial and professional. My friends were fascinated with the 'greens,' mac & cheese and ribs w BBQ sauce...all things that don't really exist in their country. For me, it's... More

Going to Harlem, 328 Lenox Avenue, MM 125st; Sylvia's is a restaurant where you can find the tradition of south texas. It's called poor food, because everything is good when fried, but the fried chicken offered is really good. Juicy and tasty. The waffle is sweet and it's served with the chicken. It's strange but it's good. If you like... More
