As Close to Good Southern Cooking As You'll Get in NY

One of the Harlem locals told me about Sylvia's, and recommended I go there for the best soul food. I did- and wow! If you want great food; including smothered chicken, cornbread, catfish, collard greens, great ice tea, candied yams etc etc then GO there! The staff are very friendly (I went on my own and sat up at the... More

Good food, but unless you're used to heavy brunches, this is not for the fainthearted. Things are fried. And deep fried. And served in heaps. Good service - friendly, efficient and fast.

There is nothing to dislike about this place. The service, the ambience, the food, the heritage all combined for an experience I won't soon forget. The good: A classy hostess, greeting and seating us with grace and warmth. A cozy, hip atmosphere, rich in culture. Friendly, efficient servers. And the food? I had salmon croquettes, black-eyed peas, and collard greens.... More

We went for an early dinner and the restaurant was bustling with clients. We only had to wait 15 minutes for a table. This was our second time in Harlem and the first time stopping in to eat at Sylvia's. Everything we ordered tasted delicious. I've never had cornbread like that before; it was fabulous. The texture was soft and... More

I love the choice of southern style food in the am with grits, biscuits, and choice of typical American breakfast foods. A legend in Harlem with a grocery line started by the late owner and her son with advise from a Great Wall Street legend Willie Daniels

I'm not sure where the negative reviews are coming from. I was there father's day afternoon and I had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and fresh, the staff was wonderful , not a tourist trap it was full of locals.

We went to Sylvia's for lunch in the middle of the week and got a table outside, no problem. They do take reservations for parties of 10 or more. Great people watching while sitting outside. I had the Harlem Style Chicken and Waffle. Oh, so good! The coating on the chicken was really tasty and crispy. Chicken was cooked to... More

Given how well known Sylvia's is, we were expecting it to be a tourist trap trading off its name. We were pleasantly surprised to find an almost exclusively local clientele and seriously good food. The couple at the table next to us were talking about coming here when their grandmothers hadn't cooked them a meal in a while. The fried... More
