Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse. Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

Overall a good experience!

Went here because we were staying in the Hotel Élysées. It was a good restaurant and the service was excellent. We booked a table and it was allocated and available at the time requested. The food was good perhaps not the best, I've both had steak it was not the best I have eaten but was good. If... read more

This is a New York landmark that has kept its "classic atmosphere" over almost 8 decades. Come here to enjoy an evening surrounded by fine trappings, excellent and attentive service, a complete menu including some very special old fashioned cocktails, and a stunning wine list.

This place makes wonderful cocktails. We ordered from the menu and we loved them. The service was at the level that you expect for an old-school cool, classic and classy bar. Well-heeled, but still warm and welcoming. Maybe a tad too crowded? That's understandable.

Cool space, and enjoyed the monkey murals on the wall. Came in for a lunch in the middle of the week - seemed to wait a while for our food. Husband ordered a burger (med rare) and it came out well done. I had the cobb salad, and it was just average. Thought it was rather expensive for the small... More

We were tired after a day of sightseeing and this was a nice place to unwind and have some good food. The service was excellent and we loved the build it yourself sundae on the dessert menu. It was a fun and unexpected touch.

Did not try the restaurant but went with relatives for an after dinner drink. Possibly the best sweet manhattan I have ever had... Very nice choice of premium liquors and intertesting cocktails... Fantastic pianist... Very cozy and just as old-fashioned as needed to relax. Will no doubts come back.

Great selection of standards and a very up-to-date barman, Scott, who can mix anthing from old to new in the way of cocktails. We always stick to Hennessy XO, which not every place has on hand.

We had a lovely dinner during restaurant week. The fixed price menu with app, entree and dessert was a wonderful bargain. Very creative and tasty cocktails and wonderful food. Service was outstanding. Highly recommend!!

I went to the Monkey Bar during restaurant week and ordered from their $38 pre-fixe menu. I had the arugula & fennel salad, the basil & zucchini risotto and the chocolate mousse & Oreo ice cream. Everything was wonderful, nicely presented and beautifully served, The portions were fairly small, which was to my liking, but if you're in the mood... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
