Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.

Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

Jazz Era Fun

I loved the set up in there. The tables and seating in the back were semi circles and made it really feel like an era dining experience. The bread was delish and soft. The beat salad was refreshing and the risotto warmed me right up. Great drink selection (Although pricey, the ingredients were... read more

We found the menu to be rather limited. The service was very average and difficult to get a smile out of the waiter. Normally in NY, waiters are very helpful and friendly. It "appeared" that if they had not seen you before, they did not want to see you again. The entrees were average at best. Atmosphere was elegant and... More

better as a pre meal bar for drinks rather than a full sit down meal. when we arrived for dinner, the bar was heaving and had a great atmosphere, we were shown to our table which in the back room restaurant, a large glamourous room but with no atmosphere as there were only 3 other diners. the food was unmemorable... OK, needed a place for lunch a few moments ago and walked by the empty Monkey Bar. Had eaten there previously while staying at the Elysee, I thought I'd found the right place. On entering I could not help but notice the place - and it's not small - had only two tables with guests. So I figured gettng a... More

Hip, warm, friendly crowd with better food than some of the more highly rated (by Zagat) restaurants.

It is a really lovely spot, evocative of times past, decent food and attentive service. Good although not enormous menu.

A friend chose this bar because it was a "top 10 for celebrity sightings". We did not find that to be true, but the table was nice and the food was good. She enjoyed her pasta dish and I enjoyed my scallops and ravioli.

I'll say it again, this is the perfect New York dinner experience. The restaurant is beautiful. The mural is famous, and it should be! The food was delicious. The service was excellent. The perfect Rusty Nail with a big piece of lemon peal. The atmosphere is just delightful. This is not nostalgia. And while JFK and Peter Lawford should be... More

We had drinks there a couple of nights and on each occasion it was great. The bar has a super vibe, service good and lots of cocktails and a good selection of wines to choose from.

Compared to other restaurants in the same area, this place served smaller portions, no sharing an entree here. Food was good however.

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
