Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse. Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

Beautiful ambience

This place has just a feel that it came out of the 1940s with its banquets and wood. We really enjoyed the oysters and the fish and duck. We were able to walk in on a Thursday night without a reservation.

They have some very unique, and tasty, cocktails. A great way to finish a fabulous day in New York. Waiters were very friendly. So handy for Elysee Hotel Guests!

The Monkey Bar is one of Graydon Carter's do-overs (Vanity Fair Magazine and the Waverly Inn of scrumptious mac and cheese with truffles) and has a great gathering space for happening people. The buzz in the bar is palpable, and the lighting and checkered tablecloths is very clubby and intimate. Go often and you are an insider. Food and setting... More

We recently had a family reunion dinner at the Monkey Bar. The service was very professional, we were never rushed, the waiter was super attentive and was always there when we needed him. There was a lot of lively conversation going on, and he masterfully navigated around us without ever intruding. The murals by Ed Sorel of Jazz Age icons... More

Love the look of the place. Cocktails are great, service great. Staff is super knowledgable and GM is very kind. Didn't get to try the food but would like to. Highly recommended.

My wife and I hosted her son and daughter-in-law on a Saturday evening. It was a good choice for several reasons, the most important of which is that--though not pretentious in any way--the food was good and the atmosphere just casual enough for us just to have a good time. I will admit that the price, with tip, was a... More

This place has amazing cocktails and food! There is usually Jazz music playing or a pianist to add real atmosphere to the small bar area. It is cozy and has booths.

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
