Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse. Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

A NY Classic

We had a lovely dinner during restaurant week. The fixed price menu with app, entree and dessert was a wonderful bargain. Very creative and tasty cocktails and wonderful food. Service was outstanding. Highly recommend!!

I went to the Monkey Bar during restaurant week and ordered from their $38 pre-fixe menu. I had the arugula & fennel salad, the basil & zucchini risotto and the chocolate mousse & Oreo ice cream. Everything was wonderful, nicely presented and beautifully served, The portions were fairly small, which was to my liking, but if you're in the mood... More

We were a large group of 11, celebrating a mini-reunion. The Monkey Bar was convenient to our hotel and selected by a New Yorker in the family. An excellent choice. Our table was in the corner and so did not, we hope, affect other guests. Service was attentive. Food was great. The lovely room is very special. Expensive but worth... More

Loved the scene and the bar:-) Gave that feeling of the old, stylish era when the mob ruled the place! Food was ok, must add we attended a weddingparty, so keeping the food top notch is hard because of long speeches between courses. Inpeckable service, the staff was great! The bar was so cool:-) Just perfectly dimmed lights, kind of... More

Was starving after my flight and even though it was late in the evening on a Friday, I was able to check-in at the Elysee and get a table in the dining room without a reservation. Everyone was so nice and the food was amazing. I never drink alone but it was so elegant that a glass of champagne seemed... More

This is a lovely little bar but the prices are extortionate!! It's easy to find somewhere just as nice with more affordable prices

As often as I take a seat in hot lounge or at the bar I was looking forward to dinner in the iconic dining room. Unfortunately it was closed (season?). We were allowed to walk into the dining room and see it and the mural. It was so swank and appealing. At any rate it was a solid 3 point... More

This is a small but pretty well known bar/restaurant, favorite of many celebrities. The menu is very diverse, from grilled cheese to steak. The service, though, is without flaw. They treat everyone like a VIP. Try to get here for a drink and light lunch.

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
