Excellent Indian Food - Great Vegetarian options

This is a place where you can get authentic Indian food. However, some people can have difficulties with the menus as many dishes are not very standard ones. We ordered vegetarian dishes, crispy okra, jackfruit biryani, stuffed eggplant and a paneer dish. The food was simply awesome specially the crispy okra and jackfruit biryani. Apart from food, the place is quite... More

Amma is a small restaurant located inside an apartment, so you feel in the living room of a classic midtown building. The decor is dated, it feels 80´s, pink with peach. The staff isn't the most welcoming. The menu is strange for a virgin in Indian food. I didn't understand anything of the menu. We had the trio of stuffed... More

How many Indian restaurant you know close between lunch and dinner time? Amma does. That means you're getting food from people who are well respected and well rested. The food is fantastic from start to finish. Try to dress up as this is mid town and the U.N. is few hundred yards away. Expensive? Yes, Worth it? YES.

This is the 2nd time I go to Amma. The first time I had the chance to enjoy their "sampling menu" which takes you on a tour of all the Indian cuisine they have to offer. Unfortunately this time was not the case since I went quite late for diner. Still, the food is really good, the service as well.... More

We visited the Amma on Christmas Eve and had a fantastic meal. The food was fantastic, the service was excellent and the waiters were very friendly. The restaurant is not large but has a great atmosphere and I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant for lovers of Indian food.

Amma is a quiet upscale Indian eatery near Lexington and 50th. The lunch crowd was subdued but clearly into Indian food. Reminded me of a residence converted to a restaurant. The waiters are knowledgable, the food was sophisticated and the overall experience was excellent.

We made reservations for three for dinner, upon arriving we were offered a tiny table more suitable for two persons rather than three adults. Besides...the table was in a corner next to built-in seats on the side were right next to me lay a toddler fast asleep, The child's parents made no effort to accommodate their child in such a... Amma is probably as close to fine dining as a North Indian kitchen can get in North America - even my sophisticated friends from Mumbai were pleasantly surprised. The spices are deliciously balanced and the flavors are on point - finally you may order your food "hot" without fretting about the excess chili afterkick to the back of your palate.... More

I may have had the not-so-tasty dishes because I can't fathom this being the best Indian restaurant in New York. I had the butter chicken and although not bad, it wasn't by far the best I've ever had. Service was very good, it seems that all waiters and the manager are there to serve you, it's not compartmentalized as in... More

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
