Just a Little Off Course

It is a very friendly restaurant, the atmosphere is superb, and if you order fish you are on the right track. We have spent a lot of time in Greece, 24 islands, and large chunks of the mainland. Been a client for quite some time, the place is constantly full, you can almost always find a line....Food is good, fish is fresh and service is excelent. We were back recently and enjoyed our meal. I do recommend visiting during summer to enjoy the outdoor terrace. Its a great midtown location close to many hotels, attractions and the subway.

If you visit Steve Cohen's Chamber Magic at the Waldorf, this is a good place to complete the evening. Make a res. Crowded and noisy.on a Friday night. The bar was hopping. The food is very good. We had a Greek salad at $16.95. Our Greek salad specialist thought it was the best ever and he's been around. The wild... More

Very fresh ingredients, very good service. I just keep coming back to this place with the family over and over for dinner. Don't miss out on the Kolokithi appetizer, it's my favoite. The prices here can be too much for a Greek restaurant though.

This was our 3rd visit to Avra - it never lets us down. We had the roasted beets, tuna tartare, spiced feta spread, and domata. We came here after a play - so it was late and we did not get a main. But I'm sure that would have been fabulous as well.

Great food, great ambience! Got the Xifias (swordfish), excellent! Everything was delicious from the bread to the wine to the entrees. Wish we had decided to stay for dessert!

We came here for dinner on a Sunday night. It was busy, but the staff kept up with it well. Waiting time for the food was pretty short, especially considering the busy-ness. Crusty loaves of sliced bread were served with radishes, creamy & fresh hummus, and assorted olives - good stuff; the olives and hummus stood out. As an appetizer,... More

My long time favourites in New York are Milos and Periyali. So on my first visit to Avra there was stiff competition in my mind between the elegant quality of Milos and the homespun charm of Periyali. I am pleased to say that Avra found a spot between them. It was raining when i arrived and after stowing my umbrella... More

We wanted a different experience for a Greek dinner than the typical fare. Having a Greek parent and being raised on a typical Greek diet, seafood is a staple in the diet and Avra offers quite a variety. Our waiter was very helpful in assisting us with our choices. We started with spanokopita, which was very flavorful and flaky. The... More

My second time in Avra, hoping the first experience was a bad dream, however, as it happened last time, the food was good but the service and the "climate" was pretty poor. Noisy, to a extreme, when you hear the conversation 3 tables down from you, it is bad. People screaming conversations because they could not hear each other across... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
