Good food but nothing else

The restaurant is busy with large corporate groups, huge demand and regulars who seem to know the host and seem to expect preferential treatment. (Be prepared to not feel special). Initially I was concerned and not much happier when I saw our table in the back room. However, the server was friendly, helpful and responsive. We had the fried cheese,... More

Although there is no dress code.. you can't just walk in there with average everyday clothes you need to dress formal or you will get stared at by workers as well as customers. But on the other hand the food is absolutely delicious. I had the salmon and it was the best salmon I've ever had, not fishy tasting at... More

We went into this restaurant at lunchtime for a drink and enquired whether the restaurant would cater for us post theatre at around 11pm that evening. The receptionist advised that it would not be a problem and we would be very welcome. That evening having arrived at 10.45 we were completely rushed through our meal. As they provided pita bread,... I had heard rave reviews about Avra so expected something special. Sadly, this massively popular restaurant didn't tick my boxes, simply because the waiting staff were univesally grumpy and abrupt and seemed hell-bent on getting us fed and out as fast as possible. The food was fine, but the experience average. Cost for two was $250.

Came here for dinner with colleagues. We had a 7 pm reservation and had to wait 45 minutes for our table. ?. Bar area is too small to accommodate the wait and overflow so we stood with our coats in heels for almost an hour. Food was decent. Grilled octopus v good. I have been here many times but maybe... I've eaten here three times on different trips to NYC and each time I've had a great meal, with attentive service, and a great experience. Definitely need to make reservations, they are always busy. Try it if you are in midtown, you'll be sure to enjoy.

Recently my husband and I were in New York and our friends took us to Avra for dinner. Beautiful decor, cozy and comfortable, our server Adonis was very friendly and took great care. Food was totally out of this world. Desserts were sublime. We would love to go back to Avra next time we are in New York.

The fish at Avra is always fresh and accompanying greens are delicious. We had a relaxing evening, with service that was just right -- good suggestions, well paced, and unobtrusive. Lively at lunch, Avra is cozy and comfortable at dinner. We'll be back! Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it's hard to get a really ideal... More

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
