Upscale Greek dining

We wre in NY for a couple of days and met up with old friends on a Friday evening. As visitors to NY it was a great way to capture the atmosphere of after-work NY dining. Pricing what you would expect for upscale dining in this part of NYC.

I ate here a few years ago, and the food was much better then. I won't go back. If you're looking for high-end Greek food in midtown, go to Nerai. It's excellent!!

You can't beat Avra which has stood up so well over the past 10+ years. My favorites are the grilled Octopus appetizer with onions in home made vinegar sauce and of course the fish of the day price fixe. I love the sliced tomatoes paired with whatever grilled fish is being served and baklava dessert. The wine list is robust... More

We enjoyed the outside seating on a beautiful evening as well as dined on the best fish we have ever eaten! Service was excellent and we loved the atmosphere.

I LOVE this restaurant. We have dined here on our last three trips to NYC. The service is excellent and the food outstanding. Fresh fish cooked to perfection. The fig ice cream was awesome! Moussaka and grilled calamari were exceptional.

Avra is one of my favorite dinning establishments in Manhattan. Every time I visit the experience exceeds expectations from the range of sea food selections, customer service and attention from management. Our last visit included a visit to our table by the manager who personally took us to view the available fish selections for our table. The food was prepared... More

I have been to Avra many times, mostly on business and have never had a bad meal there. Seafood is their specialty , and is consistantly fresh. Many of their fish are displayed on a large table in the back of the room so that guests can choose their fish if they desire. The greek appetizers and salads are also... More

I am not much of a seafood guy. Two nights ago at a business dinner, went to Avra. The fish was simply amazing. The service was friendly, the wine list superb and the atmosphere lively and yet not over bearing, at least where we were sitting towards the back. A definite repeat.

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
