I was recently in NYC during a snow storm, and I wanted to find a restaurant within walking distance of my hotel due to the weather conditions. My friend and I ended up at Sugiyama. We called for a last minute reservation and were greeted warmly, and seated right away. The restaurant itself is on the small side, yet warm... More

When you're going to the theatre in this area--or when you want an elegant meal--take yourself to this excellent restaurant. The place itself is lovely, the service is gracious and timely, and the modern kaiseki food is fresh, and beautifully prepared and served. We had the 3-course pre-theatre dinner and enjoyed it immensely. I had seared tuna to start and... More

So after reading all the amazing reviews at this place, my friend and I had to give it a try. The place has a nice elegant simplicity to it with an amazing light sculpture on one end. Service was also very friendly and prompt and we didn't have to wait long for each course. We decided on the Modern Kaiseki... More

Sugiyama is a lovely, serene restaurant, tucked under the raucous Yakitori Totto in the same building. They fly a bit under the radar, not getting a lot of press or chatter on the foodie forums, but they deserve accolades. Kaiseki, the Japanese form of a seasonal tasting menu, is the style of service here. There are a few style to... More

When I phoned to make a reservation, the man on the phone signed off by saying, "I look forward to meeting you." The warmth and graciousness of the comment hinted at the beautiful experience that was to come. The patriarch of the family seated next to us summed things up by saying, "My law partner explained to me how you... More

I can't believe I went to this restaurant based on the reviews on this site. So disappointed!!! Went there for a pre-theater meal and was finding it difficult to find somewhere nearby with great reviews. I have lived in Japan so know a little about Japanese food but don't profess to be an expert by any stretch of the imagination.... More

You'll have to make just a bit of an effort to find this restaurant, but will be well rewarded for the quest. In an area where the bulk of the restaurants cater to the tourist thong, Sugiyama is a breath of fresh air of authenticity. The unremarkable entry on 55th street on this totally unremarkable block leads to beautiful serenity... More

We enjoyed our meal. The fixed menu makes it easy to order, and every dish was well prepared and high quality, but not "exotic". The preparations were simple and highlighted the quality of the food.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. The chef is a great guy, the serivce, so friendly. And the food! Go very hungry and get the kobe beef dinner, which is effectively two dinners in one: a sashimi and sushi dinner, followed by a beef dinner. They have a rice dish wrapped in banana leaf that is a... I rarely enjoy eating alone but the food here was so good one tends to forget that one is alone and the presentation of the food makes it a treat to one's senses. Ate there everyday I was in New York. MUST GO.
