To someone who grew up on Korean food and still eating out frequently at Korean restaurants like myself, this place represents a rarity on two accounts - vegetarian and upscale. For all the rhetoric from the Korean government about globalization of Korean cuisine, I feel that little has been achieved, but a restaurant like this is a major accomplishment. A... More

This is a family favorite for special occasions (birthday dinners, etc). The ambiance is lovely, with the interior modeled like a classic Korean manor. Seating is traditional style on mats/ no shoes (with leg openings under table). Recently they've added art by a local Korean painter. The food is absolutely perfect, with attention paid to every detail. Unlike many asian... More

most delicately fried veg dumplings, pancake combo was divine, crispy sweet and sour mushrooms were rich chewy and fulfilling. Soju drinks were great and fun to try. Loved the decor. Beautiful and delicious food.

I went to Hangawi after hearing about it and it lived up to those expectations. The food was excellent and good portions. We ordered the fixed price Lunch for $22 each which was a good value. Otherwise, ordering straight off the menu a la carte could have been very expensive! The service was great from Jay our waiter and it... More

I was a bit dubious about an all-vegetarian Korean restaurant (I like my meat), but this place dispelled my doubts at the starter. The atmosphere is really nice and calm - lights down, shoes off, soft music - and you feel like you can really relax with your food. The dishes were all interesting and tasty, and I didn't miss... Every since I had Korean food in Beijing (have sadly not been to Korea), I have been wanting more. However, I have been disappointed the few places I have been so far. However, Hangawi delivered. Apart from being seated next to the door to the kitchen, which is a bit noisy and hectic, the room and atmosphere is fantastic. The... More

Was recommended this place by an acquaintance. Having never tried Korean food and being vegetarian, really did not know what to expect. Our server, Jay was an excellent help. For starters we had the spicy baby dumplings, combination pancakes, silky tofu in clay pot & veg dumpling soup. Clay pot was ok. Would highly recommend the other starters. For main... More

We haven't been back in quite a while, and food is still excellent! The ambiance is serene and service is good. Everything that we had was great: Kale & Broccoli Kimchi Salad ($12), Stuffed Shiitake Mushroom ($11), GF Tofu with Broccoli ($21), Fragrant Bamboo Rice (comes with soup and spices $28), multi-grain rice ($2.50), Ginger Tea (large mug $6), and... If you love Korean cuisine and/or happen to be a vegetarian Hangawe is a must! Authentic (they require you to take the shoes off), nicely decorated, and good service. Menu contains classics such as Kimchi pancakes but also have dishes that I never tried before. Food is fresh, delicious and flavorful. This is my new favorite Korean in NYC. Sorry... More

As a vegetarian i love it when you enter a place and just order anything off of the menu without having to worry wether or not it contains meat. Had a three coarse meal (which was around 37,50). Nice atmosphere, lovely food (the tofu steak was lovely!) and great service.
