Yes, we knew all the hype- famous chef, chef who fishes- but it was some discordant notes that had us shaking our heads. The special appetizer was a spicy shrimp that was 5 spicy on a scale of well, 5. The person doing the ordering luckily loved spicy food, but I would expect a restaurant to at... read more

My wife and I found ourselves unexpectedly laid over in New York and found this place online near our hotel. We had some special requests that were handled as if this was something they dealt with all the time. Food was outstanding. Cocktails prepared perfectly. We had the salt-encrusted corvina for two which was one if the best fish entrees... More

I know the opinions on this place are mixed but I had to post my very favorable experience. Service was impeccable, the wine steward hit a home run with his pick (and didn't suggest a wildly expensive bottle). Crudo to start with strawberry grouper with tomato salt, amazing tuna carpaccio, so tender octopus over creamy corona beans, and local clams... More

I took a friend who owns a starred Michelin restaurant in London. He was blown away by the food (especially the crudos) and service. A chef that catches his own fish and is capable of cooking it (or NOT where necessary!) to such consistently high standards. While other starred places vie for attention, there is no comparable restaurant . Kudos to... More

Located in the now super trendy Hells Kitchen, this restaurant over priced, has average food and a terrible sommelier. My wife and I took our long time friends there as a thank you for letting us stay with them. Let me start with the somm. I am the first to admit that I do not know much about Italian wines... More

Food was just okay - considering it is a fish restaurant there was no fish on the menu that I knew or wanted to eat. Service was indifferent. Good news was that the portions were small.

Esca is an Italian Seafood (but primarily seafood) place we ate at this week while in NYC. The food was outstanding, the portions are huge. We were a group of 4 and 3 pasta dishes and 2 main courses where just the right amount of food for us. They have a large wine selection and great choices at almost any... More

No question about it, a table for two puts you in a cramped area close to the next table of two. But hey it's the high rent district in NYC. We had reservations and were seated as soon as we got to the restaurant. As soon as we sat down the waiter asked if we had time constraints (yes, we... More

The food was fine but the service is what shone. Attentive but not hovering. Portions were decent. While fresh not terribly exciting. Would not return for the price.

Esca is a Southern Italian Trattoria devoted to seafood, located in the theatre district. Elegant setting (although a bit loud due to bad acoustics) with a staff that has mastered the art of high class service. There were so many different fish on the menu it was incredible. There are only about 6 pasta dishes, of which 3-4 are spaghetti,... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
