This is a restaurant that presents as a chic venue. As a result you can expect really great dishes and a great selection of wines. The food is fresh and carefully prepared. The ambience is low-lit and classically themed. The prices are appropriately high compared with most other vegetarian restaurants. But, with a chic image comes a certain set of... More

We've raved about Candle 79 to anyone who will listen since our first visit nearly ten years ago, but we've noticed a disconcerting trend on our last few visits, as portions grow smaller and the quality of the food diminishes. This was a place that astounded us in the past, with vegan food that was amazing, but on our visit... More

Very creative vegetarian. From beginning to end. I had a wonderful cocktail with vodka, sake, cucumber, and cayenne. Indicative of their inventiveness. Then some very fresh nori rolls with avocado wasabi. And to continue- a great/fresh seaweed salad with shitake. Service was great and we were not rushed. We were allowed to linger and talk over coffee and canolli with... More

My 13 year old daughter decided to become vegetarian right before our big NYC trip, so I researched vegetarian restaurant options and chose this one. I had the avocado salad and a delicious sangria, both of which were very good. Daughter's brunch special waffles were good. If you are staying in midtown, I would not trek to the upper east... More

I had lunch here twice during my three day stay. The mushroom crepe was so unbelievably good, I had to go back and try something else. Had the burrito the second time, which was good but I enjoyed the crepe more. The service I had at lunchtime was great and the food was served relatively quickly. There is a nice... More

Aside from superlatives about the food, Candle 79's wait service is deplorable. Was there on a slow Monday night, so what was the excuse? Had to remind waitress to bring my hot beverage that I requested before the main course. To add further insult to injury, she did not check on us, and proceeded to eat her own dinner at... More

My non vegan/ vegetarian mother and myself ate there last.night. Service was superb ..we were seated downstairs and it was lively. The food was wonderful. We shared the grilled artichokes and I had the chickpea cake...both Devine. The organic wine was wonderful. We left and declared this will be on our list with each NYC trip. Loved it!

Staying in Upper East Side

Neighborhood Profile
Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighborhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighborhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.
