Balthazar was a place that I was looking forward to for quite some time. I have to say I was pleasntly surprised at some things, and disapointed in other things. For one, the $15 beet salad with no dressing was a real waste of money. The beets were cooked perfectly, but they were unsalted on a plate with undressed mache.... more

Balthazar personifies a certain kind of quintessential New York eatery: hip but not trendy, buzzing but not cramped, elegant but not stuffy, and with great food at a relatively affordable price tag. Its menu is French/Belgian bistro: we shared a fabulous soft-shelled crab (the Tuesday's special) as an appetizer, and then chose Steak Frites (steak and chips) and duck comfit.... more

The atmosphere was buzzing already by 6-30pm in the evening. Was given a great table in the corner looking out over the whole restaurant. Food was sensational. Couldn't fault the restaurant one bit. more

Brunch/ breakfast was great...it's meant for sharing especially for Asian appetite. Love the old interior feel of the place. Servers were very attentive. It's also kid friendly. more

We were a group of 8 and had a reservation. We came in on time and were promptly shown to our table. So far, so good. It's a beautiful restaurant, with a distinctive Old World feel (tall ceilings, lots of wood, brick wall, and a wall full of wine bottles). When our waiter brought us the menu, I was surprised... more

We have an unwritten rule that when we are in NYC we never eat at the same restaurant twice, unless, of course, it is Balthazar. We have been eating there every year for the past 5 years and usually two or three times per trip. The food is classic french bistro style, the ambience and decor (though manufactured) are good... more

A really French-style brasserie - crowded and loud, just like it should be. Everything was great. Just one point, which I made to our server, is that I had monkfish, which was wrapped in bacon. The bacon was so heavily smoked that it totally overpowered the fish, which was a real shame. A bit more thought would have avoided that. more

Very Good

I took a teen and a tween to Balthazar, and all 3 of us had a terrific meal. The food was excellent, the service attentive and the food a very good value for NYC. The only negative is that the room was a bit noisy. We were there, however around "happy hour". We will go back the next time we... more
