Lunch special: Great deal and big bowl of tasty food

We were right near Chinatown and decided to go hunting for a nice lunch. Knowing that Mott Street is the center of much of the action, we hunted around with smart phones in hand, looking up ratings. 456 Shanghai Cuisine is a very good place to enjoy the lunch specials. This was our first time... read more

Ordered the crispy duck which was BLAND and TASTELESS. Was watched by the waiters the whole time we ate which made it uncomfortable but being intimidated into handing over a BIGGER tip by the waiter was nothing short of a disgrace. Avoid.

We visited 456 unaware of any reviews. We thought it was great. Very fast and the staff was entertaining. It was very crowded!!! It was great to see the kitchen staff grinding fresh pork and making the dumplings fresh oh and the dumplings were wonderful.

Used to be our favorite place in chinatown. A visit last week changed our mind after noticing the new staff. Though the service is still good and fast. Gone are the efficient shanghai lady managing at the front desk. The wall became more cluttered. The pork iin fried dumpling is pink. The vegetarian duck is dry and blend. The beef... More

Had to visit a Chinese restaurant in China town and this looked as good as any. I'm not sure what I expected, everything was ok, infact, just like most Chinese restaurants I have tried. Quite busy, ok staff, of food, reaonably priced. I guess I expected a wow, but just got fed instead.

This place got good reviews on About and even a NY Times shout out, but we found out dining experience at 456 Shanghai Cuisine to be decidedly average, although other diners seems happier with their selections. The overall criticism is that even the spicier dishes could have used more zing. Those non-spicy selections were worse and resulted in me adding... More

I stopped into 456 for lunch the other day and was not disappointed. I had the shredded pork with Peking Sauce and hot and sour soup lunch special delicious and reasonably priced. I also had the juicy buns which take time but are worth the wait. There are eight of them so make sure to share them with someone. They... More

Thought this place rated well so tried it and tried some of the NYTimes rates dishes. Really disappointed. We're used to pushy rude Chinese Resturant staff but this took to a new level. As a couple we were asked to sit at large round table for 10 with another couple and two singles, both of whom were pretty intoxicated. Ordered... More

The so called recommended dish of fried fish and braised pork is average and not as good as I thought. The hot & sour soup is so watery and doesn't taste right. The only plus is the shanghainese dumpling us o.k.. The waiter is expecting at least 15f tips and came running to us demanding we give at least 15%... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighborhood Profile
Chinatown
Bursting with an amazing array of sights, sounds, and smells on every block, a visit to Chinatown feels like entering a different world. It’s a colorful spectacle that gets even more crowded on weekends, when families stream in to enjoy huge dim sum feasts and to stock up at the markets on Mott Street. To take a break from the buzz, grab something sweet from one of the many bakeries in the area and head to Columbus Park, where many Chinatown residents exercise, play games, and chat the day away.
