Great restaurant

We loved this restaurant behind a pawn brokers in the lower east side. Amazing atmosphere , food great as was the service. If you are looking for something a bit different would really recommend this. Worth a trip to the ladies for a complimentary glass of champagne!

Loved this experience. Fun concept and incredible food and drinks. We went on a Thursday night with a reservation for 3. It was crowded in a good way with everyone having a good time. The food...Uh-mazing! I think we had every tapas option on the menu. It's all a blur since I was also enjoying Emerald Gimlets. The Roasted Bone... More

Loved the experience at Beauty and Essex! You enter through a pawn show on essex street. Sounds strange I know, but once you enter you are amazed at the decor and food! We had delicious food! Our waiter was excellent and that helps make for a perfect meal. His recommendations were spot-on!

We didn't make a reservation so we had to wait 1 hour on the bar. We enjoyed our coctails and the music and then one girl took us to our table , we have a sit but the temperature was crazy cold. We were freezing. 2 couples next to us eating with cardigans and jackets , i didnt have jacket... More

We visited Beauty & Essex with some friends that live in New York. Not sure we would have found it on our own...certainly doesn't look like a restaurant from the street! It was very neat walking through the shop to the restaurant! The restaurant itself is awesome - great decor and its massive!! Lots of natural light as well! Cocktails... More

My daughter and I were in NY touring universities and she hadn't been to Beauty and Essex before. She was floored by the "jewel box" concept (dingy pawn shop facade opening to a grand and mysterious interior). We ordered about 6 Tapas-sized dishes between the two of us and each was creative and delicious. Would recommend to anyone wanting a... More

My daughter and I were there for dinner on a recent Friday night. When you walk in, you walk into a pawn shop, and there's a nondescript door at the back that leads you into the restaurant, which is gorgeous! Service was excellent, and food was delicious!! We enjoyed thai shrimp, eggplant pizzetta, orange-glazed carrots, grilled cheese dumplings, spaghettini with... More

A few ex-work colleagues and I had dinner here on my much awaited visit to NYC. It was a great pick! Tucked away in a classic speak easy style, this is a great restaurant and lounge. Food is classic tapas style, Italian. Decor is a classic baroque style. Great vibe and crowd.

On the way in, through the pawn shop, we stopped to admire the guitars on the wall...the restaurant has two floors and 4+ rooms...all well decorated in the "jewelry box" theme...locket room, pearl room, etc. The clientele were young (20-40), well dressed and in spite of it being "full", it was not very noisy. We had a corner banquette which... More

Very good food and service. The menu is extensive and the portions are actually a very good size, so even if you are sharing - pace yourself as everything is quite delicious. Advance reservations are a must. Atmosphere on a Friday night is definitely lively and loud.

Staying in Lower East Side

Neighborhood Profile
Lower East Side
Straddling the bridge between New York’s thriving immigrant past and its modern transformation into a beacon of global art and culture, the Lower East Side is one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in the city. The blocks of tenements that represented the promise and blight of the Lower East Side immigrant experience now command top dollar for new residents. Right next to old-world delis, 24-hour bodegas, and the garment shops of Orchard Street, you’ll find hip clubs, fashionable bistros, and luxury hotels beckoning at all hours of the evening. If you love nightlife and live music, it’s hard to beat the scene here.
