It's like being back in Italy on vacation

I cannot rave enough about this restaurant. From the fresh ingredients, to the friendly staff, or the generous portions. I went here a few times over the summer and loved the food, not the crowd. But any good place is going to attract a crowd. Then those same people return over and over and... read more

This place is all about the pizza -- a crusty, charcoal edged creation that comes out of an oven that is the reason for the restaurant. If you yearn a taste of Naples, you'll love this cramped, noisy, cheerful and utterly authentic restaurant. Don't leave without trying the nutella pizza for dessert.

I had their prosciutto pizza with buffalo mozzarella. Just plain amazing! You really feel like in Italy. Owners and servers speak italian. The profiterole dessert was to die for. Cant wait to try other things!

We went to their new location on 82nd Street. Two levels, modern design, very inviting vibe with a full bar. Great staff, very attentive. Love that they all speak italian! Try the pizza and get the porchetta. It's delish. Portions can all be shared.

I have been a local in the area for many years and i believe San Matteo has some of the best and most delicious food in the city. The restaurant is small but has a nice atmosphere. The service is great and the pizza is amazing. I highly recommend this place if in the city.

Walked into San Mateo for a casual Sunday lunch before leaving NYC & was happily surprised with food quality & service. Both were beyond our expectations. Very friendly staff & great Italian wine selection with amazing food. The quality was very fresh and portions were larger than expected. I split a Caprese salad and RUCOLA E BRESAOLA salad with a... So Good! We had a long day of walking to visit a friend who lives around the corner from this place. It was exactly what we needed. It's typically tiny NYC so be prepared to cozy up to your dining partners but, once the food arrives you won't care about anything else. As others have said, the dough is beyond... More

San Matteo knows bread/dough as well as anyone in New York City. There's something special cramped into this little corner of a restaurant not the least of which is the wood burning oven that produces such good dishes. Everything on the menu tastes great but San Matteo's specialty is bread - pizza, calzones etc. I go often and have never... More

Was looking for a less expensive alternative for the family and in laws and San Matteo was recommended. Even though it is a small place, they took a res for 8 people on a Friday night. The two hosts (who did just about everything except cook) were so helpful and gracious to us and the whole crew. Draught Beer on... More

The pizzas were very good with fresh products but the local is a bit tight and not very well air conditionned in the summer

Staying in Upper East Side

Neighborhood Profile
Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighborhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighborhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.
