Great scene for early night drinks

Stopped by with some girlfriends while we waited for our table at a nearby restaurant. Bartender poured us some HUGE glasses of wine so we were happy. Around 9pm the scene was good for people watching. Definitely some attractive mid-twenties to thirties crowd. Later on when we came back it was... read more

Came here on a Saturday for a going away party around 10 pm and it was packed.. even for the city it was abnormally packed but it definitely wasn't anything special imo.. drinks were overpriced but the bar tenders were really good.. very on point and observant to people who needed drinks. If you can get here when it's empty... More

Been here a few times with friends. Tends to get really packed and sometimes hard to get a drink, but great atmosphere and great bar food, specifically love the fries and the beef sliders!!

I have walked by here many times, and just recently made the decision to stop in on a whim. I picked the perfect time as the staff was in the process of dimming the lights and placing candles on all the tables - I am such a sucker for a romantic ambiance. The steak was delicious, and the ahi tuna... More

We had passed by the Penny Farthing and it was always busy so we decided to stop in for dinner one day on our way home. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip and it was absolutely delicious! It was a huge portion and actually had me to filled up that I ended up taking half of my meal home. My... More

The service was great. We didn't lack water at all and the brunch included drinks like Mimosa, orange juice, coffee and tea. They also have fries and toast. We were six people and we were all pleased with the food. I had Penny Breakfast which is pose eggs, parmesan and asparagus. I wanted whole grained toast instead of white toast... More

The Penny Fartthign is ideally located in the epic East Village and 5minutes away from Union Square. The bar is huge with a lot of standing place and even has a terrace when the sun is out. However..if you don't want to eat anything and if you are more a bad luck person, you will have to stand up while... More

Nice looking place, but 5 of 6 meals came out wrong. Not just a little wrong. The staff was pretty surly about it. They added insult to injury by adding a 20% gratuity onto the bill. With so many other good restaurants close by, I would pass on this one.

On a pleasant summer evening The Penny Farthing was the perfect spot for a drink and nibble before seeing a show at the Classic Stage Company across the street. The inside of this cute tavern was very full of happy patrons -- and very loud. So sitting outside was delightful and conversation was easy -- along with great people watching.... More

We stumbled upon Penny Farthing in the East Village in NYC on the way to the CSC theater. The decor is essentially "bar" with wooden tall seats and booths on the side, TV screens going, loud music and a lively atmosphere. Noise level a little high for me but not as bad as other places - even fancier restaurants. I... More

Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
