Great sidewalk seating and tasty tavern fare

On a pleasant summer evening The Penny Farthing was the perfect spot for a drink and nibble before seeing a show at the Classic Stage Company across the street. The inside of this cute tavern was very full of happy patrons -- and very loud. So sitting outside was delightful and conversation was... read more

The Penny Fartthign is ideally located in the epic East Village and 5minutes away from Union Square. The bar is huge with a lot of standing place and even has a terrace when the sun is out. However..if you don't want to eat anything and if you are more a bad luck person, you will have to stand up while... More

Nice looking place, but 5 of 6 meals came out wrong. Not just a little wrong. The staff was pretty surly about it. They added insult to injury by adding a 20% gratuity onto the bill. With so many other good restaurants close by, I would pass on this one.

We stumbled upon Penny Farthing in the East Village in NYC on the way to the CSC theater. The decor is essentially "bar" with wooden tall seats and booths on the side, TV screens going, loud music and a lively atmosphere. Noise level a little high for me but not as bad as other places - even fancier restaurants. I... More

The Penny Farthing fills a cavernous space in the East Village. It attracts a large crowd, but it takes a truly substantial number of patrons to fill the place. During the summer, the glass doors on the west side open to provide a truly comfortable setting. I tried a crock of French onion soup and a turkey burger. The soup... More

We stopped in here for lunch on our way to an afternoon performance at Classic Stage Theater. We had good food and we also enjoyed the atmosphere. A Sunday with families and other groups gathered to relax and visit. I would go back when in the neighborhood!

We stopped for brunch, and the mimosa, the bloody marys and the eggs benedict were delish. What more can you ask for? Woodsy, sophisticated rustic feel, and very spacious bar area -- I bet that place is hopping at night. And the bathrooms were new and spacious and nice. You don't see that ver often in a little neighborhood place... More

what a place! we had dinner on haloween, beer was cheap (3$ a pint) and gooooood, we had the special burger which was percetly made, and fish-n-chips - traditional and good. the apple pie for desert was a nice addition. service was fast and accurate and all with a smile. must visit!

Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
