Super food, great atmosphere, nice service

Have been taken to Mari Vanna twice by a American-Russian collegue. Enjoyed it thoroughly both times. Delicious fish, pickles, beautiful breads. A very homely and welcoming atmosphere.

Russian restaurant with interesting food and nicely decorated. We ordered a selection of appetizers and enjoyed them all, but the music was so loud we found ourselves shouting to have a discussion. We were refused when we asked to turn down the music.

I have read a lot of reviews saying that this is the closest you get to home-cooked Russian food, but was underwhelmed. The food was pretty good, but nothing spectacular -- nothing compared to my grandmother's cooking. The pros: - Atmosphere is superb. The cons: - Service is meh. Perhaps I was there on a busy night, but it took... More

I like this place - the charm, the food, the people.... It is a little pricey for what it is, but overall a good place with some fun Russian choices in Manhattan as opposed to trecking down to Brighton Beach.

I went with two good friends to this restaurant at there suggestion and didn't know what to expect. From the outside it looks very country folksy and they have a wonderful bench area that is a very popular spot for selfies and photos - I was asked by at least ten people to take their picture in this little magical... From the second you walk in, the Russian experience is very real. The decor, the waitresses' outfits, the plates, cups, etc. the presence of Russians also confirms the restaurant's authenticity. The food was very good. We had lamb chops and the sea bass. I had a raspberry flavoured drink that was delish! The service was also good! Ambiance- great! I... More

I feel like my husband and I are on a mission. We love the Mari Vanna in Washington DC, will visit the one in California later this year and hopefully the London one also, so we were determined to visit the NYC location next time we were in town. Last night we had a wonderful Russian meal in a gorgeous... More

Sometimes it is simply the sum total of small details, taken in the aggregate that collectively add up to great and Mari Vanna is indeed that sometimes. The decor is interesting, the service, the presentation equally so. The waitstaff were all friendly and efficient without being heavy handed, the homemade flavor infused vodkas were good but the food, the borscht,... More

Staying in Flatiron District

Neighborhood Profile
Flatiron District
Offering many of the city’s best restaurants and shops set amid classic New York architecture, the Flatiron District is no longer under the tourist radar. At 23rd Street is the famous triangular Flatiron Building, which makes a good picture no matter what angle you photograph it from. Be sure to look up at the elegant architecture as you stroll the streets - much of this neighborhood is part of a historic district that was home to many of the city’s most famous department stores at the turn of the century. At the northern end of the neighborhood, Madison Square Park is best known for being home to a famous burger shack, but it can also be a quiet refuge to spend an afternoon, and it frequently hosts interesting public art exhibits. In the lower part of the Flatiron District you'll find Union Square, a bustling crossroads at all times of day and night.
