Frankie and Johnnie's is a former speakeasy dating to the 1920s. You walk up a steep flight of stairs to reach the second floor dining room, and another flight to reach the restrooms -- all originally designed for security purposes during the Prohibition era apparently. The restaurant has a wonderful history, and the ambience feels it. The wait staff greets... More

Decided to try this restaurant based on an ad we had read in one of the theatre programs. Apparently, F and J had once been rated as having the best steak in town. Unfortunately, we were not very impressed. Salad was bland and basically inedible. My rib eye was very tough. Would not go back.

We were looking for somewhere to eat late after a Broadway show (Les Miserables - fantastic!) and came across this place. You have to go up to the first floor and my immediate impression was of a place that was stuck in its past heydey and now just looked dated and a shabby. I love places with a history but... More

It seems like going back to the 60s/70s.. waiters dressed in a classic livery, with old classic furniture. And I really enjoyed the meal! I would have liked to eat another dinner there! Sure, I recommend it!

I've eaten many a steak, but until tonight I hadn't eaten the best. The T-Bone was amazing, cooked to perfection served with home cooked fries, creamed spinach and asparagus. The cocktails were outstanding and the wine list was varied with a very good selection of wine from around the world to suit everyone's taste. Roxy, our waitress, was wonderful, made... More

I hate giving a less than a 4 star to a restaurant, but maybe they'll read this. The service and the steak were outstanding, but the sides were not very good. It is hard to mess up home fried potatoes and spinach, but both were very bland. I liked the fact that the restaurant is not a chain and I... More

I love small but outstanding restaurants in New York City and FDrankie and Johnnie's has to be the best. In addition to their steaks, I highly recommend their thick charcoaled pork chops served with the Frankie and Johnnie's special salad. Outstanding food and service always. I have been a regular customer since the late '70's.
