Not a great first impression

The branzino special was overcooked and did not taste fresh, and the broccoli rabe was mushy. Not a good value for the price, but worked for a quick pre-theatre meal. Staff were helpful and efficient, but then the place was not busy at all. I thought a South African restaurant would know how to do... read more

Braai took me back to my time in Capetown & Pretoria. You can have a taste of real South African food without the very long plane flight! When I saw biltong on the menu (SA's version of jerky) I knew I was in the right place. Plus mielie-pap (SA grits; a starch staple side dish). SA has a long venerable... More

Best South African food in Manhattan. If you are looking for for good authentic food this is you're place. They have lamb bunny chow which is basically a lamb stew served in sourdough bread.

We wanted to try different types of foods so we ordered the "rainbow platter" where you could order 5 of the tapas plates for $42. It was great to have a sampling of a number of things. Our favorite was the ostrich sliders; expected it to taste like chicken, but it was more like a hamburger. It was flavored excellently... More

We were planning on dining elsewhere; but, the wait was unreasonable so we wandered down the street. A quick internet search suggested Braai ... we were hesitant. South African? Wait staff was wonderful and our waitress guided us to an octopus starter (so tender and delicious), crab cakes that were well flavored and served with mushrooms (also a starter), two... More

The food was good, but the selection of wines and the wine glasses themselves were sub-par (and this is coming from a non-oenophile). The ambience reminded me of the basement of my college fraternity house and the temperature was extremely warm (on a day that was 60 degrees), so warm that after removing our jackets we need to remove our... We stumbled across Braai and initially walked past it. Something told us to turn back and we are glad we did. We were off to see a show and this place was quiet so we thought there would be no delays in getting served. The food was the best we had in New York with the ostrich special with mango... More

Had a late dinner here sitting at the bar as I was flying solo. I ordered a bunch of appetizers and the lady taking my order started laughing, finally composing herself enough to tell me that I was substantially over ordering. I wound up having both the samosa and lamb chop appetizer and it was a more than ample meal.... More

We were so excited to go and eat at this restaurant (being south african born, living overseas. We were served our cokes straight away and then ordered our food a little after that. There weren´t many people and it looked like no one was eating just drinking the mimosas which were on some kind of special. After waiting almost an... More

The ambiance is very good. However the lighting was so dim inside the restaurant that I could barely see the menu. We opted for Tapas. Service was poor. Important to note is that the venison tapas is served raw. We were not informed about it and when I inquired with the server. It was almost like I was expected to... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
