Arcane is my go-to restaurant for maxing and relaxing, date night or fun group dinners with friends. It's one of the rare restaurants in Manhattan that has a down to earth, upbeat vibe while serving excellent food at affordable prices. If you go on a quieter night, you'll see old friends from several countries playing dominoes at the bar. Have a beer "a la pression" and some fish, or the awesome avocado and shrimp salad. The steak is good too. If it's mellow, eat, enjoy and chill out. If it's crowded, enjoy the good music and the mixing of languages, cultures and cocktails. Mmm.

Beautifully decorarted, great service and very good food

We had a groupon and went there for dinner at 5 PM on a Thurday. They just opened. They were very gracious about not only sitting us but also about everything else. The Fried Oysters were the very best we ever had anywhere in the world. We travel 260 days or more per year and go to Japan every... read more

We recently went again on a busy Friday night. The service here is just phenomenal for a small low key restaurant in alphabet city. The food is surprisingly good and a tremendous value, even better if you score a $30 for $60 Groupon. This time around we had the beef empanadas which are huge, 2 for $8. They forgot to... More

How do I begin to tell this story of a restaurant/bar, place for friends and family to come together as one. Admittedly Arcane is on the far eastern perimeter of the east village, no more dangerous than any other neighborhood in Manhattan these days. Although far enough away that is reasonable to assert any one here is here because they... More

My wife and I wound up here late at night after arriving for a weekend visit on a Friday. It was around 11pm and most places had stopped serving dinner but Arcane was still serving. Its more of a bar than a restaurant, the menu is fairly limited but they had options that would work for most people along with... More

Friendly atmosphere, polite service. Nightly specials are great, especially Monday night's Rib-eye Steak.

Good points: they have a nice welcoming staff (some speak French), good food, nice and good cocktails, and a nice romantic well decored place. Some friends can also come and have some cocktails at the bar after dinner time. Only negative points: a bit far from any metro, so have to think about the walk when you count the timing.... More

A casual bar restaurant in the edgy Lower Eastside. Avenue C is bustling with trendy cafes and restaurants and reminds me of Nottinghill ten years ago. Arcane is a casual restaurant with a bar. Caribbean creole food - curried pork stew, fried banana guacamole dip, spicy lemon chicken and more traditional steaks. Breezy local crowd. a trio; guitar, trombone and... More

This unassuming East Village restaurant does not put on any pretenses, but it sure packs a punch. All menu options are divine, from the appetizers to the mains. On my last visit to this restaurant, I ordered the salmon and was thoroughly impressed. As expected by this quality of establishment, the meat was tender and succulent. Even better than this,... Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
